📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Corolla on a flat, level surface.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the transmission cool if the vehicle was recently driven.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and support it with jack stands. Keep the vehicle as level as possible.
- An OBD2 scan tool with live data means a scanner that can show the transmission fluid temperature while the engine is running.
- The final fluid level must be checked at about 35-45°C / 95-113°F CVT fluid temperature.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Engine Cover
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside in order. Take a phone picture first.
Step 2: Locate the CVT Fill and Drain Plugs
- Use a light and look at the transmission case on the driver side area of the engine bay/underside.
- The fill plug is on the side of the CVT case. The drain plug is at the bottom of the CVT pan area.
- Before draining, always remove the fill plug first. This makes sure you can refill the transmission.
Step 3: Remove the Fill Plug First
- Place the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the transmission area.
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen and remove the CVT fill plug.
- Remove the old fill plug gasket and discard it.
- If the fill plug will not come loose, stop here and do not drain the fluid.
Step 4: Drain the Old CVT Fluid
- Move the drain pan 8-quart minimum directly under the drain plug.
- Use a 6mm hex bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Measure the drained fluid amount if possible. This gives you a starting refill amount.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Install a new transmission drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 6mm hex bit socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Add New CVT Fluid
- Use a fluid transfer pump to pump Toyota CVT FE transmission fluid into the fill opening.
- Add about the same amount that drained out, then add a small extra amount to prepare for the overflow level check.
- Do not install the fill plug yet if you are doing the level check immediately.
Step 7: Warm the Fluid to Check Level
- Connect the OBD2 scan tool with live data to the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
- Start the engine while the vehicle remains safely supported and level.
- With your foot on the brake, slowly move the shifter through P-R-N-D, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position, then return to P.
- Watch CVT fluid temperature on the scan tool.
- The level check range is about 35-45°C / 95-113°F.
Step 8: Set the Correct Fluid Level
- Keep the engine idling.
- Use the 6mm hex bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the overflow/check plug if equipped separately from the drain plug assembly.
- If fluid flows out in a steady stream, let it drain until it becomes a thin trickle.
- If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add Toyota CVT FE transmission fluid through the fill hole until fluid starts to trickle from the overflow/check port.
- When the fluid is a thin trickle at 35-45°C / 95-113°F, the level is correct.
Step 9: Reinstall the Overflow and Fill Plugs
- Install a new transmission overflow plug gasket if your Corolla uses a separate overflow plug gasket.
- Use the 6mm hex bit socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the overflow/check plug to Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Install a new transmission fill plug gasket on the fill plug.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench 5-50 Nm to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover
- Wipe spilled fluid with shop towels.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the lower splash shield.
- Lower your Corolla carefully using the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum after removing the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle. Check underneath for leaks.
- Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes. Avoid hard acceleration at first.
- Recheck for leaks around the drain, overflow, and fill plugs.
- No battery registration, programming, or infotainment reset is required.
- If the transmission slips, shudders, or has a warning light after service, stop driving and recheck the fluid level with scan-tool temperature.
