This repair replaces the continuously variable transmission fluid, called CVT fluid, in your Altima. The CVT uses a steel belt and pulleys instead of normal gears, so it must use the correct Nissan-compatible CVT fluid.

📋 Before You Begin

- 🌡️ Drive for 10-15 minutes so the CVT fluid is warm, not scorching hot.
- 📏 Measure the drained fluid amount so you can refill the same amount first, then fine-tune the level.
- 🔍 A scan tool reads live data from the vehicle computer. For this job, it is used to see the actual CVT fluid temperature.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Altima at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front pinch weld support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands.
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Shake gently to confirm stability.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover or flat-head screwdriver to remove the plastic clips.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
- Take a quick photo first.
Step 3: Locate the CVT Drain Plug
- Look under the transmission case on the driver-side/front area for the CVT drain plug.
- Place the drain pan 10-quart minimum directly under the plug.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before loosening the plug.
Step 4: Drain the Old CVT Fluid
- Use a 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen and remove the CVT drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Use the clean graduated measuring container to measure exactly how much fluid came out.
- Clean the drain plug with shop towels.
- Install a new CVT drain plug crush washer.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop towels so leaks are easier to spot later.
Step 6: Access the CVT Fill Tube
- Open the hood and locate the CVT dipstick/fill tube near the transmission side of the engine bay.
- If equipped with a locking dipstick cap, use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully release the small locking tab.
- Remove the dipstick or cap.
- Insert the long-neck funnel into the fill tube.
Step 7: Add New CVT Fluid
- Add the same amount of Nissan NS-3 compatible CVT fluid that drained out using the long-neck funnel.
- Pour slowly to prevent spills or air pockets.
- Start with slightly less than the measured drained amount if you are unsure.
- It is easier to add than remove.
Step 8: Warm the CVT Fluid for Level Check
- Connect the OBD2 scan tool with live CVT fluid temperature display to the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
- Start the engine and keep your foot firmly on the brake.
- Move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 3 seconds in each position, then return to P.
- Watch the CVT fluid temperature on the scan tool.
- The level check should be done around 35-45°C / 95-113°F.
- If your scan tool cannot read CVT temperature, use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan as a backup estimate, but scan-tool temperature is preferred.
Step 9: Check the Fluid Level
- With the engine idling, transmission in P, and vehicle level, remove the dipstick or cap.
- Wipe the dipstick with shop towels, reinstall fully, then remove again to read the level.
- The fluid should be within the marked range for warm CVT fluid.
- If low, add Nissan NS-3 compatible CVT fluid in small amounts using the long-neck funnel.
- If overfilled, drain a small amount from the drain plug using the 19mm socket, then retorque the plug to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the Cap and Splash Shield
- Reinstall the CVT dipstick or fill tube cap by hand.
- If the locking clip was damaged, install a new CVT dipstick tube cap locking clip.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the lower splash shield bolts.
- Reinstall the plastic clips using your hands or the plastic trim clip remover.
- Snug the splash shield fasteners; do not overtighten plastic clips.
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Altima slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.

- ✅ Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes. Avoid hard acceleration.
- ✅ Recheck underneath for leaks around the CVT drain plug.
- ✅ Recheck the CVT level at the correct fluid temperature if shifting feels unusual.
- ✅ Dispose of old CVT fluid at a recycling center or parts store that accepts used oil.
- ✅ If the CVT shudders, slips, whines, or has metal debris in the drained fluid, stop driving and have the CVT diagnosed.
