🔧 Pathfinder - CVT Transmission Fluid Change

Your Pathfinder uses Nissan NS-3 continuously variable transmission fluid. This procedure drains and refills the CVT, then sets the fluid level at a specific temperature; an incorrect fluid type or level can damage the transmission.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

Assumption: This procedure is for routine fluid replacement without removing the CVT oil pan.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Use only genuine Nissan NS-3 fluid or fluid explicitly approved for Nissan NS-3 applications. Do not use conventional automatic-transmission fluid.
  • ⚠️ Keep your Pathfinder level during draining, filling, and level adjustment.
  • ⚠️ Support your Pathfinder on four correctly rated jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ CVT fluid and exhaust components may cause burns. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ The final level check is performed with the engine running. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from moving components.
  • ⚠️ Do not add transmission additives or flush chemicals.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

  • CVT charging-pipe cap seal - Qty: 1 if damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park on a flat, solid surface. Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels before lifting.
  • 📏 Raise your Pathfinder evenly and support it at all four approved lifting points. Use the digital level on a flat section of the underbody to verify it is level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
  • 🧰 Connect the OBD-II scan tool and confirm it can display CVT Fluid Temperature. This live reading is needed to set the final level correctly.
  • 📝 Record the amount drained. Reinstalling approximately the same amount provides a safe starting point before final adjustment.
  • 🌡️ Begin with the CVT cool enough that its fluid temperature is below 35°C (95°F).
  • 🚫 No infotainment service mode or battery disconnection is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm and Circulate the Fluid

  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to monitor CVT Fluid Temperature.
  • Start the engine and hold the brake pedal. Move the selector slowly through P, R, N, and D, pausing about five seconds in each position.
  • Return the selector to P, switch off the engine, and allow the fluid to cool below 35°C (95°F) before draining.

Step 2: Raise and Level the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to raise your Pathfinder at the approved lifting points.
  • Place all four jack stands beneath the approved support points, then lower the vehicle carefully onto them.
  • Use the digital level to verify that the vehicle is level in both directions.
  • Place the wheel chocks against the tires that remain most accessible.
  • Shake-test the vehicle before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Cover

  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves before working underneath.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to release the lower splash-shield clips that block access to the CVT drain area.
  • Move the shield aside and illuminate the area with the shop light.

Step 4: Open the Charging Pipe

  • Locate the CVT charging pipe in the engine compartment.
  • Release the locking tab by hand and remove the charging-pipe cap. The charging pipe is the transmission’s dedicated refill tube.
  • Inspect the cap seal. Replace it if cut, flattened, hardened, or swollen.
  • Install the CVT charging-pipe funnel and hose adapter loosely so the transmission can be refilled after draining.

Step 5: Drain the CVT Fluid

  • Position the 10-quart drain pan directly beneath the CVT drain plug.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the drain plug slowly.
  • Allow the first flow of fluid to drain completely.
  • Use the 5mm hex-bit socket and ratchet to remove the internal overflow tube through the drain opening. The overflow tube is a small standpipe that establishes the correct fluid level.
  • Allow the remaining fluid to drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Use the drain pan markings and 1-quart graduated measuring container to measure and record the total quantity removed.
  • Inspect the fluid for metallic glitter, large debris, or a strong burned odor. Stop the procedure and have the CVT diagnosed if these are present.

Step 6: Reinstall the Overflow Tube and Drain Plug

  • Clean the overflow tube and drain-plug seating surfaces with absorbent shop towels.
  • Thread the overflow tube in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 5mm hex-bit socket and torque wrench to tighten the overflow tube to Torque to 3.5 Nm (31 in-lbs).
  • Install a new drain-plug sealing washer on the drain plug.
  • Use the 19mm socket and torque wrench to install the drain plug. Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • The small overflow tube is easy to overtighten.

Step 7: Add the Initial Fluid Quantity

  • Use the CVT charging-pipe funnel and hose adapter to add Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid.
  • Add approximately the same quantity that was drained. Pour slowly to prevent the charging pipe from backing up.
  • Do not exceed the recorded amount at this stage.

Step 8: Circulate the New Fluid

  • Start the engine with the parking brake applied and keep the service brake firmly pressed.
  • Move the selector through P, R, N, D, and back to P, pausing five seconds in each position.
  • Repeat the sequence twice.
  • Leave the engine idling in P.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to watch CVT Fluid Temperature. Perform the final level check between 35-45°C (95-113°F).

Step 9: Set the Final CVT Fluid Level

  • Keep the engine idling, your Pathfinder level, and the selector in P.
  • Place the 10-quart drain pan below the drain plug.
  • Use the 19mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug without removing the internal overflow tube.
  • If fluid comes out in a steady stream, allow it to drain until it becomes a thin stream or rapid drip.
  • If no fluid appears, reinstall the drain plug loosely with the 19mm socket, add NS-3 fluid through the charging-pipe funnel in 0.25-quart increments, and repeat the check.
  • The level is correct when fluid exits as a thin stream or rapid drip while the scan tool reads 35-45°C (95-113°F).
  • Install a new sealing washer if the original replacement washer has been damaged during repeated checks.
  • Use the 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Switch off the engine.

Step 10: Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle

  • Remove the CVT charging-pipe funnel and hose adapter.
  • Press the charging-pipe cap into place by hand and confirm its locking tab is fully engaged.
  • Use absorbent shop towels to clean fluid from the CVT case and drain-plug area.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to reinstall the lower splash shield and its clips.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Pathfinder slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it carefully.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and verify that no CVT warning message or warning light appears.
  • 🔍 With the engine idling, inspect the drain plug and charging-pipe cap for leakage.
  • 🚗 Take a gentle 10-minute road test. Check for smooth engagement into Reverse and Drive without racing the engine.
  • 🔍 Park on clean, level ground and inspect underneath for leaks after the road test.
  • ♻️ Pour the used fluid into sealed containers and deliver it to an authorized waste-oil recycling facility. Do not pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
  • 🧰 No battery registration, programming, or infotainment reset is required.
  • ⚠️ If the CVT shudders, slips, whines, overheats, or stores a warning after service, stop driving and have it professionally diagnosed.
