📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Civic on level ground.
• Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Let the vehicle cool until the transmission case is safe to touch.
• A crush washer is a soft sealing washer that gets squeezed when tightened. Replace it every time to prevent leaks.
• A CVT is a continuously variable transmission. It uses special fluid and must not be filled with standard automatic transmission fluid.
• No infotainment menu, scan tool, battery registration, EPB retraction, ADAS calibration, or HV isolation is required for this service.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front of the Civic

• Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
• Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
• Lower the Civic gently onto the jack stands.
• Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before going underneath.
• Shake gently to confirm stability.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

• Use a 10mm socket to remove the splash shield bolts.
• Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen any screw-style retainers.
• Use a flat trim clip remover to remove plastic clips without breaking them.
• Set the splash shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Locate the CVT Drain Plug

• Look at the lower side of the transmission case on the driver-side area.
• The CVT drain plug has a square 3/8-inch drive opening.
• Place the fluid drain pan 6-quart minimum directly under the drain plug.
• Wipe the area with shop towels so dirt does not enter the transmission.

Step 4: Remove the Drain Plug

• Insert the 3/8-inch drive ratchet directly into the square drain plug opening.
• Turn counterclockwise slowly to loosen the drain plug.
• Remove the plug by hand once loose and let the fluid drain completely.
• Use nitrile gloves because the fluid can irritate skin.
• Do not rush the draining.

Step 5: Inspect and Clean the Drain Plug

• Use shop towels to clean the drain plug.
• The drain plug has a magnet that collects fine metal dust. A light gray paste is normal.
• Large metal chunks or shiny flakes are not normal and may indicate internal transmission wear.
• Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug by hand.
• Install the new transmission drain plug crush washer.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug it gently.
• Use the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
• Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 7: Measure the Old Fluid

• Carefully pour the used fluid from the fluid drain pan 6-quart minimum into the measuring container 5-quart minimum.
• Measure how much fluid came out.
• Plan to refill with the same amount first, usually about 3.5-4 quarts for a drain-and-fill.
• Measuring prevents overfilling.

Step 8: Lower the Civic to Level Ground

• Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
• Lower the Civic fully to level ground.
• Keep the wheel chocks in place.

Step 9: Fill the CVT Fluid

• Open the hood and locate the CVT fill tube/dipstick area near the transmission.
• Use the long-neck funnel in the fill tube.
• Pour in Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid slowly.
• Add the same amount you measured from the old fluid first.
• Do not overfill. Add in small amounts if needed.

Step 10: Circulate the New Fluid

• Start the engine with your foot on the brake.
• Move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D-S-L, pausing about 3 seconds in each position if equipped.
• Return the shifter to P.
• Let the engine idle for a short time.
• Use safety glasses while checking around the vehicle for leaks.

Step 11: Check Fluid Level

• Park on level ground with the engine warm.
• Remove the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinstall it fully, then remove it again.
• The fluid should be within the marked range on the dipstick.
• If low, use the long-neck funnel to add Honda HCF-2 CVT fluid in small amounts.
• If overfilled, drain a small amount using the 3/8-inch drive ratchet at the drain plug, then recheck.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

• Raise the front slightly again with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum if more access is needed.
• Support it again with jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
• Position the splash shield by hand.
• Use the flat trim clip remover only if you need to align or replace clips.
• Use the Phillips screwdriver to reinstall screw-style retainers.
• Use the 10mm socket to reinstall splash shield bolts snugly.
• Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.

• Start the Civic and check under the transmission for leaks.
• Take a gentle 10-15 minute test drive.
• Confirm smooth takeoff, steady acceleration, and no warning lights.
• Recheck the drain plug area after the test drive.
• Recheck fluid level on level ground after the transmission is warm.
• Dispose of used CVT fluid at a local oil recycling center or service shop.
