🔧 Forte - Automatic Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill
Assumption: This procedure is for the factory 6-speed automatic transmission. It does not apply to a manual transmission.
This service drains part of the old fluid and replaces it with Kia-specification ATF. The transmission has no dipstick, so the final level must be checked with the engine running and the fluid at the specified temperature.

- ⚠️ Support your Forte on four jack stands. The vehicle must remain level during the fluid-level check.
- ⚠️ Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
- ⚠️ Automatic transmission fluid can cause severe burns. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ Keep your hands, clothing, and tools away from the cooling fans while the engine is running.
- ⚠️ Use only fluid labeled Hyundai/Kia ATF SP-IV. Multi-vehicle fluid is unsuitable unless it explicitly lists SP-IV approval.
- ⚠️ Do not use a pressurized transmission flush machine. A drain and refill is the safer service method.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Drive for approximately 10 minutes, then park your Forte on firm, level ground.
- 🛑 Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 📏 Use the floor jack and four jack stands to raise the entire vehicle. Verify with the digital level that the rocker-panel area is level front-to-rear and side-to-side.
- 🔍 Connect the OBD-II scan tool before draining. “Live data” means sensor information displayed while the vehicle is operating.
- 🧊 Allow hot components to cool until they can be approached safely.
- 📝 The normal drain-and-refill amount is approximately 3.5-4.0 liters, but the temperature-based level check determines the final amount.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the shield bolts beneath the engine and transmission.
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic retainers without breaking them.
- Lower the shield and arrange the fasteners in removal order.
- Photograph fastener locations before removal.
Step 2: Locate and Loosen the Fill Plug First
- Use the shop light to identify the transmission fill plug on the upper transmission case, below the air-filter housing area.
- If access is restricted, use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the air-intake duct and air-filter housing fasteners.
- Use the 24mm socket, extension, and ratchet to loosen the fill plug before draining any fluid.
- Do not continue unless the fill plug can be removed. This prevents leaving the transmission empty if the plug is seized.
Step 3: Drain the Old Fluid
- Position the graduated drain pan beneath the transmission drain plug.
- Use the 24mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug slowly.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it falls to an occasional drip. This commonly takes 10-15 minutes.
- Record the exact amount drained and inspect the fluid for metallic flakes, a burnt odor, or a milky appearance.
- A light coating of gray paste on the magnetic plug is normal. Large chips or needle-like fragments require professional transmission inspection.
Step 4: Install the Drain Plug
- Use absorbent shop towels and brake cleaner to clean the plug and sealing surface. Spray the cleaner onto the towel rather than into the transmission.
- Install a new drain-plug sealing washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to Torque to 39-49 Nm (29-36 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Add New SP-IV Fluid
- Use the fluid measuring container to measure the replacement fluid.
- Place the ATF hand-transfer pump hose securely into the fill opening.
- Pump in approximately the same amount of Hyundai/Kia ATF SP-IV that was drained.
- Install the fill plug with a new sealing washer and tighten it temporarily with the 24mm socket. Final torque will be applied after the level check.
Step 6: Circulate the New Fluid
- Confirm that your Forte remains level and securely supported on all four jack stands.
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool and display automatic-transmission-fluid temperature.
- Start the engine and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the selector slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing approximately three seconds in each position. Repeat twice, then leave it in Park with the engine idling.
- Do not raise engine speed. Idling is sufficient to fill the hydraulic passages.
Step 7: Check the Fluid at the Correct Temperature
- Monitor the scan tool until transmission-fluid temperature reaches 50-60°C (122-140°F).
- Keep the engine idling and the vehicle level.
- Use the correctly fitting socket from the listed 10mm, 12mm, and 24mm socket set to remove the transmission level plug carefully.
- A thin stream or steady drip indicates the correct level.
- If no fluid comes out, reinstall the level plug loosely, stop the engine, remove the fill plug with the 24mm socket, and use the ATF hand-transfer pump to add SP-IV fluid in 200mL increments.
- Restart the engine, cycle through P-R-N-D, verify the temperature remains within range, and check the level again.
- If fluid pours out heavily, let it drain until it becomes a thin stream.
- Temperature and vehicle level both matter.
Step 8: Tighten the Level and Fill Plugs
- Install a new sealing washer on the level plug.
- Use the appropriate listed socket and torque wrench to tighten the level plug to Torque to 35-44 Nm (26-32 ft-lbs).
- Stop the engine.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fill plug to Torque to 35-44 Nm (26-32 ft-lbs).
- Use absorbent shop towels and brake cleaner to clean spilled fluid from the outside of the transmission.
Step 9: Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle
- Reinstall the air-filter housing and intake duct with the 10mm socket, 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
- Reinstall the lower splash shield using the plastic trim-clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
- Use the floor jack to lift each end slightly, remove the four jack stands, and lower your Forte carefully.
- Remove the wheel chocks only after the vehicle is fully on the ground.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and confirm the transmission-warning light remains off.
- 🚗 Take a gentle 10-minute test drive. Check that Reverse and Drive engage normally and that shifts are smooth.
- 🔍 Park on clean, level ground and inspect the drain, fill, and level plugs for leaks.
- 🧾 Record the mileage and the use of SP-IV fluid in the service history.
- ♻️ Take the used fluid to an authorized oil-recycling or hazardous-waste facility. Do not pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
