🔧 Escape - Power Steering Pump Replacement

Your Escape does not use a hydraulic power steering pump. It has Electric Power Assisted Steering, often called EPAS, which uses an electric motor and control module built into the steering system instead of power steering fluid, hoses, or a pump.

So there is no power steering pump to replace on your Escape.

Difficulty Level: Not applicable | Estimated Time: Not applicable

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Do not attempt to add power steering fluid; your Escape does not have a power steering fluid reservoir.
  • ⚠️ If the steering is suddenly very heavy, avoid driving until the EPAS system is diagnosed.
  • ⚠️ EPAS faults can be caused by low battery voltage, wiring issues, steering angle sensor problems, or internal steering gear faults.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting or replacing EPAS components may require scan-tool calibration afterward.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for diagnosis, not pump replacement:

  • OBD-II scan tool with Ford EPAS capability (specialty)
  • Digital multimeter
  • 10mm socket
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery - Qty: 1, only if testing shows weak battery voltage
  • Battery terminal hardware - Qty: 1 set, only if corroded or loose
  • Electric steering gear assembly - Qty: 1, only if confirmed faulty by diagnosis

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground with the wheels pointing straight ahead.
  • Set the parking brake and shift to Park.
  • Do not replace parts before scanning the EPAS system for trouble codes.
  • A scan tool is a diagnostic tool that reads fault codes from control modules, not just the engine computer.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm There Is No Hydraulic Pump

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to inspect the engine bay.
  • Your Escape has no power steering pump, no power steering belt pulley, and no power steering fluid reservoir.
  • If you see low-fluid advice online, it does not apply to your Escape.

Step 2: Check Battery Voltage

  • Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts.
  • Place the red lead on the positive battery terminal and the black lead on the negative terminal.
  • With the engine off, a healthy battery should usually read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
  • With the engine running, charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • Low voltage can disable EPAS.

Step 3: Inspect Battery Terminals

  • Use a 10mm socket to check that the battery terminals are snug.
  • If corrosion is present, disconnect the negative terminal first using a 10mm socket.
  • Clean the terminals with a battery terminal brush.
  • Reconnect the positive terminal first if removed, then the negative terminal.
  • Tighten the battery terminal clamps snugly; do not overtighten.

Step 4: Scan the EPAS System

  • Plug an OBD-II scan tool with Ford EPAS capability into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Enter the scan tool menu for Chassis > Power Steering Control Module / EPAS.
  • Read and write down all stored and current fault codes.
  • Do not clear the codes yet; the codes tell you where the failure is.

Step 5: Decide the Correct Repair

  • If codes point to low voltage or communication faults, repair the battery, charging, fuse, or wiring issue first.
  • If codes point to steering angle calibration, use the OBD-II scan tool with Ford EPAS capability to perform the steering angle/EPAS calibration.
  • If codes confirm an internal EPAS steering gear fault, the repair is usually replacement of the electric steering gear assembly, not a pump.

Step 6: If Steering Gear Replacement Is Needed

  • This is an advanced repair because it involves steering linkage, front subframe access, alignment, and scan-tool calibration.
  • The front wheels must be aligned after replacement.
  • The EPAS system must be calibrated with a Ford-capable scan tool before normal driving.
  • For a beginner, this repair is best handled by a qualified shop.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Escape and turn the steering wheel slowly from left to right.
  • Check that the steering assist feels smooth and even.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool with Ford EPAS capability to clear codes only after the fault is repaired.
  • Road test at low speed first in a safe area.
  • If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, have a wheel alignment performed.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 for EPAS diagnosis; $1,200-$2,200 if steering gear replacement is required

DIY Cost: $0-$250 for basic battery/terminal repair; $700-$1,400 if replacing the steering gear assembly yourself

You Save: $120-$800 depending on the confirmed repair.

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. EPAS diagnosis takes a shop approximately 1-2 hours; steering gear replacement can take 4-7 hours plus alignment and calibration.
