🔧 XT4 - Oxygen Sensor Replacement (All Sensors)
Replacing all oxygen (O2) sensors on your XT4 means swapping the sensors in the exhaust before and after the catalytic converter(s). Bad O2 sensors can cause a check engine light, poor fuel economy, and drivability issues.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool fully; it can burn you.
- ⚠️ Support the XT4 with jack stands; never rely on a jack.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; rust and debris fall from underbody.
- ⚠️ Keep the key away from the vehicle while unplugging sensors.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not strictly required, but recommended to prevent accidental shorts.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs)
- 6" extension (3/8" drive)
- 12" extension (3/8" drive)
- 22mm oxygen sensor socket (specialty)
- 22mm deep socket
- Breaker bar (3/8" drive)
- Trim clip remover
- Flathead screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- Penetrating oil
- Flashlight
- OBD2 scan tool (specialty)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Oxygen sensor (upstream) - Qty: 1
- Oxygen sensor (downstream) - Qty: 1
- Oxygen sensor anti-seize compound - Qty: 1
- Replacement underbody shield fasteners - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Let the exhaust cool for at least 60 minutes.
- If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable and isolate it.
- Spray sensor threads (where they screw into the exhaust) with penetrating oil and let it soak 10–15 minutes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the XT4
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front center jack point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the factory support points.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the underbody shield(s)
- Use a trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver to pop plastic push-clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove shield bolts.
- Set shields and hardware aside in order. Phone photo helps reassembly.
Step 3: Locate the upstream and downstream O2 sensors
- Use a flashlight to find sensors screwed into the exhaust pipe.
- Upstream (Sensor 1) is before the catalytic converter; downstream (Sensor 2) is after it.
- An O2 sensor has a wire “pigtail” going to an electrical connector clipped to the body.
Step 4: Unplug the upstream O2 sensor connector
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently lift the connector lock tab (if equipped).
- Press the release and separate the connector by hand.
- Use a trim clip remover to free the harness from any clips.
Step 5: Remove the upstream O2 sensor
- Slide the wire through the slot in the 22mm oxygen sensor socket (specialty).
- Use a 3/8" drive ratchet with a 6" extension (3/8" drive) to loosen the sensor.
- If it’s stuck, use a breaker bar (3/8" drive) carefully for more leverage.
- Unthread it by hand once it breaks loose.
Step 6: Install the new upstream O2 sensor
- If the new sensor does not come with coating on the threads, apply a light amount of oxygen sensor anti-seize compound to threads only.
- Start threading by hand to avoid cross-threading (damaging the threads).
- Tighten using the 22mm oxygen sensor socket (specialty) and 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs).
- Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Route and reconnect the upstream connector
- Clip the harness back into place using the factory clips by hand.
- Push the connector together until it clicks.
- Gently tug-test the connector to confirm it’s locked.
Step 8: Repeat the process for the downstream O2 sensor
- Unplug the downstream connector by hand; use a flathead screwdriver only if needed.
- Remove the sensor using the 22mm oxygen sensor socket (specialty) and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Install the new downstream sensor by hand first, then torque with a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs).
- Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall underbody shield(s)
- Position shields and start all bolts by hand.
- Tighten using a 10mm socket and 13mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Reinstall push-clips using a trim clip remover (press pin/center to lock, depending on style).
Step 10: Lower the XT4
- Lift slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower the vehicle slowly.
- Remove wheel chocks.
Step 11: Clear codes and verify the repair
- Plug in an OBD2 scan tool (specialty) and clear stored codes.
- Start the engine and listen for exhaust leaks (ticking near the sensor bosses).
- Test drive 10–15 minutes and re-check for warning lights.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck that the sensor wiring is not touching the exhaust.
- Confirm no check engine light returns after a short drive.
- If codes return, scan again and note the exact code (example: P0137, P0141).
