- Set the cabin HVAC to HEAT (max) later during bleeding; this helps move coolant through the heater core (the small radiator for cabin heat).
- Lay cardboard under the front of the car to spot drips easily.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Depressurize the cooling system (engine cold)
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Slowly loosen the radiator cap to the first stop to release any remaining pressure, then remove it fully.
- If it hisses, wait and go slower.
Step 2: Drain enough coolant to get below the hose level
- Place a drain pan under the radiator.
- Use a flashlight to locate the radiator drain cock (small drain valve) at the lower area of the radiator.
- Open the drain cock slowly by hand (use flathead screwdriver only if needed and gently).
- Drain about 1–2 quarts (or until the radiator level is below the hose you’re replacing), then close the drain cock snugly.
Step 3 (Upper hose): Remove the upper radiator hose
- Locate the upper hose running from the top of the radiator to the engine.
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) (or needle-nose pliers) to compress the spring clamp and slide it back a few inches on the hose.
- Twist the hose to break it loose by hand. If it’s stuck, carefully work a pick tool (specialty) under the hose end to break the seal. Don’t gouge the plastic radiator neck.
- Pull the hose off and aim it into the drain pan to catch any coolant.
Step 4 (Lower hose): Access and remove the lower radiator hose
- Lift the front of the car with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
- Remove the lower engine splash shield if equipped:
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and trim clip removal tool to remove bolts/clips.
- Locate the lower hose from the bottom of the radiator to the engine.
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to move the clamp back, then twist and pull the hose off.
Step 5: Prep the hose fittings and install the new hose
- Use shop rags to wipe the radiator neck and engine fitting clean.
- Compare old vs new hose (length, bends, diameter) before installing.
- Slide the clamp onto the new hose first, then push the hose fully onto the fitting until it seats against the stop/bead.
- Reposition the clamp in the same location as original—usually just behind the raised bead on the fitting—using hose clamp pliers (specialty).
- A thin film of coolant helps the hose slide on.
Step 6: Reinstall covers and lower the car (if removed)
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for the 10mm splash shield bolts.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower the car.
Step 7: Refill coolant
- Install a spill-free funnel kit (specialty) onto the radiator filler neck.
- Pour in Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) 50/50 premix until the radiator is full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the FULL line.
Step 8: Bleed air from the system (warm-up)
- Start the engine and let it idle with the funnel in place.
- Set HVAC to HEAT, fan on medium. (This opens coolant flow through the heater core.)
- Watch for air bubbles in the funnel and keep the coolant level topped off.
- As the engine warms up, the upper hose should get hot—this suggests the thermostat has opened.
- Once bubbles slow down and the level stabilizes, turn the engine off and let it cool fully.
Step 9: Final top-off and cap install
- When fully cool, remove the funnel and install the radiator cap.
- Top off the reservoir to the FULL line.
- Rinse any spilled coolant with water and wipe dry with shop rags.

- Start the engine and let it reach normal operating temperature; confirm you get steady cabin heat.
- Check for leaks around both hose ends with a flashlight (look for wetness or crusty residue).
- After your first drive, let it cool completely and recheck the reservoir level; top off if needed.
- Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling/auto parts facility—do not pour it on the ground.
