🔧 Outback - Water Pump Replacement
On your Outback, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. If it’s leaking or the bearing is noisy, replacement is the correct fix to prevent overheating and engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; wait until fully cold.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause slipping.
- ⚠️ Clean spills immediately; coolant is toxic to people and pets.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep hands/tools clear of the radiator fan area.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
- Funnel
- Spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty)
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive torque wrench (5-80 ft-lbs range)
- Socket set (8mm-19mm)
- Extension set (3" and 6")
- 10mm combination wrench
- 12mm combination wrench
- 14mm combination wrench
- Trim clip remover
- Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
- Plastic scraper

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket / O-ring - Qty: 1
- Engine coolant (Subaru-approved long-life premix) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Accessory drive belt - Qty: 1 Optional if cracked/glazed
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine go fully cold (ideally overnight).
- Raise the front and support securely on jack stands using the floor jack.
- Set the HVAC temperature to HOT for later bleeding (do this before you start the final warm-up).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower engine cover (undertray)
- Use a trim clip remover to pop the plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any 10mm bolts.
- Set the cover and fasteners aside in order. Bag and label clips/bolts.
Step 2: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir/radiator cap (if accessible) by hand to relieve any residual pressure.
- Open the radiator drain cock and let coolant drain fully into the pan.
- Use shop towels to wipe spills immediately.
Step 3: Remove the accessory drive belt
- Locate the belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension (a serpentine belt tool is a long handle used to move the spring-loaded tensioner safely).
- Slide the belt off a smooth pulley first, then remove it fully.
- Inspect the belt; replace it if you see cracks, fraying, or glazing.
Step 4: Create working room at the front of the engine
- If the intake snorkel/ducting blocks access, loosen clamps with a 10mm socket and remove it by hand.
- Move any wiring retainers out of the way carefully (do not pull on wires).
Step 5: Remove the water pump bolts
- Place shop towels under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Support the pump with your free hand as the last bolts come out.
Step 6: Remove the water pump and gasket/O-ring
- Gently wiggle the pump free; expect a small coolant spill into the drain pan.
- Remove the old water pump gasket / O-ring from the engine side.
- Use a plastic scraper to clean the mating surface.
- Spray brake cleaner spray on a towel and wipe the surface until clean and dry.
Step 7: Install the new water pump and gasket/O-ring
- Install the new water pump gasket / O-ring onto the pump or engine side as designed.
- Position the new pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
- Final-tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the accessory drive belt
- Route the belt correctly around all pulleys (match your under-hood belt routing diagram).
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner, then slip the belt onto the last pulley.
- Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall removed intake ducting and the undertray
- Reinstall any intake snorkel/ducting and tighten clamps using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the undertray using the trim clip remover to seat clips and a 10mm socket for bolts.
Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Install a spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty) at the fill point.
- Slowly add Subaru-approved long-life premix coolant using a funnel until full.
- Start the engine and let it idle; set HVAC to HOT and fan to low.
- Watch for air bubbles in the funnel; add coolant as the level drops.
- When bubbles stop and the heater blows hot, install the cap and shut the engine off.
- Let it cool fully, then recheck level in the reservoir and top off as needed.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Outback and check for leaks around the water pump and hose connections.
- Verify the temperature gauge stays normal during a 10-15 minute test drive.
- After the next cold soak, recheck coolant level and inspect for any seepage.
- If you hear belt squeal, re-check belt seating on all pulleys.
