🔧 Land Cruiser - Water Pump Replacement

On your Land Cruiser, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it fixes coolant leaks from the pump area and helps prevent overheating and engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray out.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the fan and belts at all times.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if you lift it; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic; keep it away from kids/pets and dispose properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended to prevent accidental fan/belt movement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 15-quart)
  • Funnel
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • 3/8" extensions (3" and 6")
  • Serpentine belt tool or 14mm wrench
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Fan pulley holding tool (specialty)
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump assembly (with gasket/O-ring) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) - Qty: 3 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (ideally overnight).
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • If you need more room underneath, lift the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands.
  • Take photos before removing brackets/hoses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove lower covers (if equipped)

  • Place a drain pan under the front of the engine.
  • Remove any lower splash shield/skid fasteners using a 10mm socket and a trim clip removal tool.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold.
  • Open the radiator drain cock and drain coolant into the drain pan.
  • If faster draining is needed, loosen the reservoir cap and use a funnel to control spills.

Step 3: Remove the fan shroud and engine fan

  • Unclip/bolt the upper fan shroud using a 10mm socket.
  • Hold the water pump/fan pulley from turning using a fan pulley holding tool (specialty) (this tool keeps the pulley from spinning while you loosen the nuts).
  • Remove the fan clutch nuts using a 12mm socket.
  • Carefully lift the fan and shroud out together.
  • Watch the radiator fins; they bend easily.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Rotate the belt tensioner to release tension using a serpentine belt tool or 14mm wrench.
  • Slip the belt off the pulleys and remove it from the engine bay.

Step 5: Remove components blocking the water pump

  • Remove any brackets/hoses attached to the front of the water pump area using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket.
  • Use shop rags to catch any remaining coolant that spills when hoses are moved.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet with extensions as needed.
  • Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
  • Clean the mating surface with a plastic gasket scraper and shop rags until it is clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring that comes with the water pump.
  • Position the new water pump and hand-start all bolts using your fingers (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 12mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall removed brackets/hoses

  • Reinstall any brackets and hose retainers using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket.
  • Make sure hoses are fully seated and clamps are in the same position as before.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt correctly around all pulleys.
  • Relieve tension with the serpentine belt tool or 14mm wrench and slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reinstall the fan and shroud

  • Lower the fan and shroud into place carefully.
  • Install the fan clutch nuts using a 12mm socket while holding the pulley with the fan pulley holding tool (specialty).
  • Tighten the fan clutch nuts with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket.

Step 11: Reinstall lower covers

  • Reinstall the splash shield/skid using a 10mm socket and any clips with the trim clip removal tool.

Step 12: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Close the radiator drain cock.
  • Fill the radiator slowly with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) using a funnel.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the “FULL” line.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT with the fan on LOW.
  • Let it idle and watch coolant level; top off as needed.
  • When the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot), continue topping off until the level stabilizes.
  • Install the radiator cap once no more bubbles appear and heat is steady from the vents.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the water pump and hose connections with the engine running.
  • After a full warm-up and cool-down, recheck the reservoir level and top off if needed.
  • Monitor engine temperature for the next few drives.
  • Scan for codes only if the check engine light comes on.
