How to Replace the Water Pump on a 2018 Toyota Avalon (Coolant Drain & Bleed Guide)
Step-by-step instructions with required tools/parts, safety tips, and key torque specs for reassembly

🔧 Avalon - Water Pump Replacement
On your Avalon, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator to prevent overheating. Replacing it involves draining coolant, removing the drive belt and pump, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the cooling system hot—hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause belt slip.
- ⚠️ Electric cooling fans can turn on unexpectedly; keep hands/tools clear.
- ⚠️ Dispose of used coolant properly; it’s toxic to people and pets.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
- Funnel
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 14mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3/8" torque wrench (5–80 ft-lbs range)
- 6" socket extension
- Flat trim clip tool
- Phillips screwdriver
- Serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench
- Gasket scraper (plastic)
- Shop rags
- Brake cleaner spray
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket / O-ring (as applicable) - Qty: 1
- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn or cracked)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (ideally overnight).
- Set the HVAC to full heat later during bleeding (this opens the heater core to help purge air).
- Take a photo of the belt routing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower covers
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the proper support points and lower onto them.
- Remove the front engine under cover/splash shield using a 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, and flat trim clip tool.
Step 2: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain area.
- Open the radiator drain cock carefully (turn by hand if possible; if tight, use a Phillips screwdriver gently).
- Remove the radiator cap slowly only after you’re sure it’s fully cool.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Locate the belt tensioner (a spring-loaded arm that keeps belt tension).
- Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench on the tensioner bolt head and rotate to relieve tension.
- Slip the belt off one pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Remove the belt from the rest of the pulleys.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)
- Hold the pulley from turning by keeping light tension on the belt path by hand, or use firm hand pressure on the pulley.
- Remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
- Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs) during reassembly.
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Place shop rags under the pump area; more coolant will spill.
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and/or 12mm socket (bolt heads can vary by location).
- Gently break the seal and remove the pump (do not pry aggressively on aluminum sealing surfaces).
- Remove the old gasket/O-ring.
Step 6: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material without gouging the aluminum.
- Wipe clean with shop rags.
- Final-clean with a light spray of brake cleaner spray on a rag, then wipe dry.
Step 7: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match orientation exactly).
- Position the pump and hand-start all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket/12mm socket.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for the water pump bolts.
Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and serpentine belt
- Reinstall the water pump pulley and start bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Route the belt according to your photo/under-hood diagram.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench to rotate the tensioner, slide the belt on, then release slowly.
- Double-check the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and lower the car
- Reinstall the under cover using the 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, and flat trim clip tool.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the car.
Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Fill the radiator with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) using a funnel.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the FULL line.
- Start the engine and set the HVAC to max heat, medium fan.
- Let it idle and watch the temperature gauge; top off as the level drops.
- Once warm and heat blows hot, shut off, let cool, then recheck radiator and reservoir levels and top off again.
- Heat must be hot to confirm coolant flow.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the pump with the engine idling and after a short drive.
- Recheck coolant level the next morning (cold engine) and top off the reservoir if needed.
- Listen for belt squeal; if present, recheck belt seating and pulley alignment.
- If the temperature rises or you lose cabin heat, stop—air may still be trapped and needs further bleeding.
