🔧 Tahoe - Water Pump Replacement
Your Tahoe’s water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. If it’s leaking, noisy, or the engine runs hot, replacing the pump restores proper cooling and helps prevent overheating damage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the coolant tank when hot; wait until fully cool.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent the electric cooling fan from turning on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Support the SUV with jack stands if you raise it; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Coolant is toxic; keep it away from kids and pets and clean spills immediately.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
- Funnel
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 1/2" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–100 ft-lbs range)
- Serpentine belt tool or 1/2" breaker bar
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 15mm socket
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Hose clamp pliers (specialty)
- Plastic razor scraper

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket/seal - Qty: 1
- Engine coolant (Dex-Cool 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if cracked/glazed)
- Upper radiator hose clamp(s) - Qty: 1-2 (only if originals are weak)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Place a drain pan under the radiator area before loosening any hoses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover and air inlet duct
- Lift off the engine cover by pulling upward firmly by hand.
- Loosen the intake duct clamps using a flat-blade screwdriver, then remove the duct and set it aside.
Step 2: Drain enough coolant for the water pump job
- Slowly loosen the coolant surge tank cap to release any leftover pressure.
- Position the drain pan under the radiator hose area.
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to move the clamp back, then carefully pull the lower radiator hose loose enough to drain coolant into the pan.
- Tip: Twist the hose to break it free.
Step 3: Remove the electric cooling fan assembly
- Unplug the fan electrical connector by hand (press the lock tab first).
- Remove the fan/shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket.
- Lift the fan/shroud straight up and out carefully (it’s bulky).
Step 4: Release the serpentine belt
- Rotate the belt tensioner using a serpentine belt tool or 1/2" breaker bar to relieve tension.
- Slip the belt off the water pump pulley and set the belt aside.
- If you’re reusing the belt, take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal.
Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped with bolt-on pulley)
- Hold the pulley from turning by keeping light tension on the belt, or hold it by hand.
- Remove pulley bolts using a 10mm socket, then remove the pulley.
Step 6: Disconnect hoses from the water pump
- Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to slide clamps back.
- Remove the water pump hoses and keep track of which hose goes where.
- Expect more coolant to drain—keep the drain pan positioned underneath.
Step 7: Remove the water pump
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 13mm socket.
- Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
- Clean the mating surface with a plastic razor scraper and shop rags until it’s smooth and dry.
- Tip: Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
Step 8: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket/seal onto the new water pump (match the original orientation).
- Position the water pump on the engine and hand-start all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten water pump bolts evenly using a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall hoses and pulley
- Reinstall all hoses onto the water pump and reposition clamps using hose clamp pliers (specialty).
- Reinstall the pulley and tighten the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt and fan assembly
- Route the belt correctly, then rotate the tensioner using a serpentine belt tool or 1/2" breaker bar and slip the belt onto the last pulley.
- Reinstall the fan/shroud and fasteners using a 10mm socket: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the fan electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
Step 11: Reinstall the intake duct and engine cover
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps using a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Press the engine cover back into place by hand.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Refill the surge tank with Dex-Cool 50/50 premix to the cold fill line using a funnel.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to hot; watch for leaks around the pump and hose connections.
- Let the engine reach operating temperature, then shut it off and let it cool fully.
- Recheck coolant level and top off to the cold fill line as needed.
- Test drive 10–15 minutes, then recheck for leaks and coolant level again after it cools.
