Tools, parts list, safety tips, and torque specs to stop coolant leaks and prevent overheating for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023
🔧 Enclave - Water Pump Replacement
The water pump circulates coolant through your Enclave’s engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing wears out, you can get overheating, coolant loss, and squealing/whining from the pulley area.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn.
- ⚠️ Support the Enclave with jack stands before working underneath.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path when releasing the tensioner.
- ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—catch it in a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not strictly required, but disconnecting the negative cable helps prevent accidental shorts near the radiator fan.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket/O-ring (if not included with pump) - Qty: 1
- Engine coolant (DEX-COOL 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
- Serpentine belt (optional if cracked/glazed) - Qty: 1
- Hose clamp (optional if original clamp is weak/damaged) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool fully (at least 2 hours).
- Remove the coolant reservoir cap only after the system is cool.
- If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- Take a quick photo of the belt routing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front-right and remove the splash shield
- Use a floor jack at the front-right lift point, then set the vehicle on jack stands.
- Use a socket set: 7mm, 8mm and a trim clip removal tool to remove the fasteners/clips holding the front-right lower splash shield.
Step 2: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan (at least 10 quarts) under the radiator drain area.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver (or the appropriate socket if equipped) to open the radiator drain and let coolant drain.
- Close the drain snugly after flow slows to a drip.
Step 3: Remove the engine cover and access the belt area
- Pull up on the engine cover to release it (it’s held by rubber grommets). Use nitrile gloves for grip.
- If an upper air duct is in the way, loosen clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver and move it aside.
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty); it’s a long handle that gives you leverage in tight spaces.
- Rotate the belt tensioner using the correct drive on the tensioner (commonly a 15mm socket), then slide the belt off one pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its stop (don’t let it snap).
Step 5: Remove components blocking the water pump (as equipped)
- If the pump area is partially blocked, remove the needed brackets/lines using a 10mm socket and extensions.
- Move components aside without kinking hoses or stressing wiring.
Step 6: Remove the water pump
- Place shop towels under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
- Remove the water pump bolts using a 10mm socket (some applications may use 13mm depending on bolt location).
- Gently pry the pump away if it’s stuck. Use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully—don’t gouge the aluminum surface.
- Remove the old gasket/O-ring. Use a pick tool if needed.
Step 7: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a gasket scraper to clean old gasket material from the engine sealing surface.
- Wipe clean with shop towels. The surface must be clean and dry.
- Do not use heavy sanding on aluminum.
Step 8: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (or onto the engine side if the gasket design calls for it).
- Position the pump and start all bolts by hand.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 3/8" drive torque wrench.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for the water pump fasteners.
Step 9: Reinstall brackets/lines and the serpentine belt
- Reinstall any removed brackets using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench.
- Torque bracket bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) if they are the small accessory bracket fasteners.
- Route the belt using your reference photo, then use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt onto the final pulley.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the splash shield using a socket set: 7mm, 8mm and trim clip removal tool.
- Lower the Enclave from jack stands using the floor jack.
Step 11: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Refill the coolant reservoir with DEX-COOL 50/50 premix using a funnel.
- Start the engine and set the heat to max temperature with the fan on low.
- Let the engine reach operating temperature while watching coolant level. Add coolant as needed.
- If your Enclave has a bleed screw on/near the thermostat housing, open it carefully with the correct Torx bit until coolant flows without bubbles, then close it.
- Torque bleed screw to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) if equipped.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the pump and any hose connections while the engine is idling.
- Verify the heater blows hot air (a sign coolant is circulating).
- Shut the engine off, let it cool fully, then recheck and top off the coolant level.
- Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck for leaks and confirm the temperature gauge stays normal.
- If any warning light appears or it runs hot, shut it down and recheck belt routing and coolant level.
