🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

On your Camry Hybrid, the engine water pump circulates coolant through the engine to keep it from overheating. This job requires draining coolant, removing the drive belt, swapping the pump, and then refilling and bleeding the cooling system so no air is trapped.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a completely cool engine. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Hybrid systems can start the engine automatically. Keep the vehicle fully OFF during the repair.
  • Remove the ignition key/fob from the vehicle so it cannot wake up unexpectedly.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the front end. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly. It is toxic to people and animals.
  • If you disconnect the 12V battery, you may lose memory settings. Battery disconnect is not strictly required for this repair, but it can reduce the chance of an unexpected engine start.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and let the engine go fully cold.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
  • Move the shift lever to Park.
  • Open the hood and remove the key fob from the car.
  • If you plan to lift the front end, support it securely with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers, depending on the drain style, to open the radiator drain cock slowly.
  • Let the coolant drain fully.
  • Open the cap slowly after the engine is cold.

Step 2: Remove access covers

  • Use a 10mm socket and trim clip tool to remove any engine undercover or splash shields blocking access.
  • Set the fasteners aside in order so reassembly is easier.

Step 3: Remove the drive belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or a breaker bar on the belt tensioner to relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off the water pump pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing. Replace it if worn.

Step 4: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Pull the pump straight off the engine.
  • Let any remaining coolant drain into the pan.
  • Remove the old gasket and clean the mounting surface with a plastic scraper.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum surface.

Step 5: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket or seal on the new pump.
  • Position the pump onto the engine by hand.
  • Install the bolts finger-tight first.
  • Tighten the water pump bolts evenly with a 12mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 N·m (89 in-lbs).
  • Snug in a crisscross pattern.

Step 6: Reinstall the drive belt

  • Route the belt correctly using the factory belt path.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to move the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt fully onto the pulleys and release the tensioner slowly.
  • Make sure the belt sits in every pulley groove correctly.

Step 7: Reassemble covers and shields

  • Reinstall the splash shields and engine undercover with a 10mm socket and trim clips.
  • Torque to 7 N·m (62 in-lbs) for small undercover fasteners if equipped with threaded bolts.

Step 8: Refill the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain cock.
  • Use a funnel and, if available, a cooling system spill-free funnel (specialty) to fill with the correct premixed coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Top off the reservoir to the FULL line.

Step 9: Bleed the air out

  • Start the car and let it idle with the heater set to hot.
  • Watch the coolant level and add coolant as the air escapes.
  • Let the engine reach normal temperature.
  • Check for steady heat from the cabin vents.
  • Shut the car off and let it cool completely, then recheck the level.
  • Air pockets cause overheating.

Step 10: Check for leaks

  • Inspect the water pump area, hose connections, and drain cock for leaks.
  • Look under the car after a short test run.
  • If you see seepage, shut the car off and recheck the gasket seating and bolt torque.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the car normally while watching the temperature display or warning lights.
  • Recheck coolant level after the next full cool-down.
  • Confirm there are no leaks after the first heat cycle.
  • If the engine overheats or coolant drops again, stop driving and re-bleed the system.
