🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

Assumption: This covers the engine coolant water pump on your RAV4 hybrid 2.5L.

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. If it leaks, makes noise, or the engine runs hot, it needs replacement to protect the engine and hybrid system.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Allow the engine to cool completely before opening the cooling system.
  • Hybrid vehicle: keep the system powered down and do not make the vehicle READY during service.
  • Coolant can be very hot and under pressure. Use caution around hoses and the radiator cap.
  • Dispose of coolant properly. It is toxic.
  • Battery disconnect is recommended before starting this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Socket extension
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Coolant hose clamps - Qty: 2-4 as needed

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal before opening the cooling system.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle if needed and support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power and drain coolant

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the 12V battery negative cable.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Open the radiator drain and drain the coolant into the pan.
  • Let it cool first.

Step 2: Remove access parts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the front undercovers or splash shields as needed.
  • Remove any intake ducting or brackets blocking access to the water pump area.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • If the pump is belt-driven, use the proper ratchet and socket extension to move the belt tensioner and remove the drive belt.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing while it is off.

Step 4: Disconnect hoses and pump fasteners

  • Use hose clamp pliers to release the coolant hoses from the water pump.
  • Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Keep track of bolt locations and lengths.

Step 5: Remove the old water pump

  • Carefully pull the water pump away from the engine.
  • If it sticks, gently work it free with a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Remove the old gasket and clean the mounting surface completely.

Step 6: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket and position the new water pump.
  • Hand-start all bolts first using a 12mm socket.
  • Torque the water pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect hoses and reinstall belt

  • Reconnect the coolant hoses and secure the clamps with hose clamp pliers.
  • Reinstall the drive belt using the tensioner and make sure it sits correctly on every pulley.
  • Reinstall any brackets, intake parts, and undercovers using a 10mm socket.

Step 8: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill the system with the correct Toyota coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Start the engine only after all parts are reinstalled and the area is clear.
  • Top off coolant as the level drops during bleeding.

Step 9: Reconnect power and check for leaks

  • Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal with a 10mm socket.
  • Run the engine and inspect the water pump, hoses, and drain area for leaks.
  • Bring the engine to operating temperature and recheck coolant level.

✅ After Repair

  • Check coolant level again after a full heat cycle and top off if needed.
  • Watch the temperature gauge and make sure there are no leaks or warning lights.
  • Recheck belt routing if the pump is belt-driven.
  • Confirm the cabin heater blows warm air, which helps show the system is circulating coolant.
