🔧 Tucson - Water Pump Replacement

On your Tucson, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it involves draining coolant, removing the drive belt and water pump pulley, then swapping the pump and refilling/bleeding the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Only work on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause belt slip and noise.
  • ⚠️ Capture and dispose of old coolant properly; it’s toxic to people and pets.
  • Disconnecting the battery is not required, but keep hands/tools clear of the cooling fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Metric socket set (8mm-14mm)
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • Serpentine belt tool or long-handled 14mm wrench
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Plastic scraper

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Hyundai-approved coolant (P-OAT), 50/50 premix - Qty: As needed
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn/cracked)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (best: sit overnight).
  • Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and place it securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the lower engine splash shield if it blocks access (use a flat trim clip tool to pop plastic clips).
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 2-gallon) under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any residual pressure.
  • Open the radiator drain (or remove the lower splash shield for access) and drain coolant into the pan.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine drive belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or long-handled 14mm wrench on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slip the belt off one pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly, then remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
  • If the belt is cracked, replace it now.

Step 3: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley from turning and remove the pulley bolts using a metric socket set (typically 10mm) and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling: Torque water pump pulley bolts to 10-12 Nm (7-9 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the water pump

  • Put shop rags under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a metric socket set and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Carefully separate the pump from the engine (more coolant will spill).
  • Remove the old gasket / O-ring.

Step 5: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use a plastic scraper and shop rags to clean the sealing surface.
  • Do not gouge the metal surface; it must be smooth and clean for a good seal.

Step 6: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket / O-ring onto the new pump (match the original orientation).
  • Position the water pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 3/8" ratchet.
  • Final tighten with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque water pump mounting bolts to 10-12 Nm (7-9 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and hand-start the bolts using a metric socket set.
  • Use a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque water pump pulley bolts to 10-12 Nm (7-9 ft-lbs).
  • Route the belt according to the under-hood diagram (or your photo).
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or long-handled 14mm wrench to move the tensioner, slip the belt on, then release the tensioner slowly.

Step 8: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Refill with Hyundai-approved coolant (P-OAT), 50/50 premix using a funnel.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to MAX HEAT (this helps coolant flow through the heater core).
  • Let the engine idle and watch the coolant level; add as needed.
  • Once the cooling fan cycles and heat is steady, shut the engine off and let it cool, then recheck and top off the reservoir.

✅ After Repair

  • Inspect for leaks around the water pump with the engine running (use a flashlight if needed).
  • Verify the belt runs straight and quietly (no squeal).
  • After a full cool-down, recheck coolant level in the reservoir and top off as needed.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck for leaks again.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $650-$1,050 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $120-$320 (parts only)

You Save: $330-$930 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-4 hours.
