🔧 Impreza - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. If it leaks, makes bearing noise, or can’t circulate coolant correctly, the engine can overheat—so replacing it promptly protects the engine.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; wait until fully cool.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—keep away from kids/pets and clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the key away from the car while working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-liter minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Coolant spill-free funnel kit (specialty)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (5–50 Nm range)
  • Serpentine belt tool or 14mm long-handled wrench
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pliers (hose clamp)
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Subaru Super Coolant compatible, premixed) - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1 (recommended if aged/cracked)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (at least a few hours).
  • Set your drain pan ready; coolant can gush when hoses come off.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removing it. Helps a lot during re-install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower splash shield

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front and set it on jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Remove the lower engine cover/splash shield using a trim clip remover and 10mm socket.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (10-liter minimum) under the radiator drain.
  • Slowly remove the radiator cap, then open the radiator drain and let it drain fully (use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed).
  • If faster draining is needed, release the lower radiator hose clamp with pliers (hose clamp) and carefully pull the hose off.

Step 3: Remove the accessory drive belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm long-handled wrench on the belt tensioner and rotate it to relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it completely.
  • If the belt has cracks or glazing, replace it.

Step 4: Remove components blocking access (as needed)

  • Move any hoses out of the way by loosening clamps with pliers (hose clamp).
  • If your coolant overflow tank blocks access, remove its fasteners using a 10mm socket and set it aside without disconnecting the hose if possible.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Hold the pulley and remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • During reassembly: Torque pulley bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place shop rags under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Gently break the seal and pull the pump away—more coolant will drain.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop rags until the surface is smooth and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Install the new water pump and gasket

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (make sure it sits flat).
  • Position the pump and hand-start all bolts.
  • Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a 3/8" torque wrench (5–50 Nm range): Torque water pump bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Install the pulley and start bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque pulley bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) using a 3/8" torque wrench (5–50 Nm range).
  • Route the belt using your photo, then use the serpentine belt tool or 14mm long-handled wrench to move the tensioner and slip the belt on.
  • Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Fill the radiator slowly using a funnel or coolant spill-free funnel kit (specialty) with Engine coolant (Subaru Super Coolant compatible, premixed).
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT, fan on LOW.
  • Let the engine idle and watch for air bubbles; periodically squeeze the upper radiator hose using nitrile gloves.
  • When the fans cycle and heat blows hot, top off to the correct level and install the cap.

Step 11: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the car

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a trim clip remover and 10mm socket.
  • Lower the car using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and inspect around the water pump for leaks with safety glasses on.
  • Verify the temperature gauge stays normal and the heater blows hot.
  • After the first drive and full cool-down, recheck the radiator/overflow level and top off if needed.
  • If you hear belt squeal, shut off and re-check belt seating/alignment.
