🔧 4Runner - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your A/C heater core, engine, and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing wears out, the engine can overheat and you may see coolant dripping from the front of the engine.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

Assumption: Stock 4.0L (1GR-FE) cooling system and belt-driven pump.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray out.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the fan and belt area while the engine can run.
  • ⚠️ Support the SUV with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic to pets and people; catch it and clean spills right away.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended to prevent accidental fan/belt contact.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Socket set: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm
  • Wrench set: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • Fan clutch wrench set 12mm (specialty)
  • Gasket scraper (plastic)
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket/O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed 50/50) - Qty: 3 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (cold upper radiator hose is a good sign).
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Raise the front and support it on jack stands under the frame.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front skid plate (if equipped)

  • Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove skid plate bolts.
  • Lower the skid plate and set it aside.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Remove the radiator cap only when cold.
  • Open the radiator drain cock and drain into a drain pan. Turn slowly; it’s plastic.
  • If your A4—(not applicable) Keep draining until flow slows to a drip.

Step 3: Remove the fan shroud and mechanical fan

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release the upper shroud clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any shroud bolts.
  • Use a fan clutch wrench set 12mm (specialty) to remove the four fan nuts at the water pump pulley.
  • Lift the fan and shroud out together (go slowly to avoid radiator fin damage).
  • Fan clutch wrench: thin wrench made for tight fan nuts.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner and relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off one top pulley, then remove it fully.
  • Take a photo of belt routing first.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley by hand and use a 10mm socket to remove the pulley bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place shop rags below the pump to catch leftover coolant.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Remove the water pump from the engine.
  • If it’s stuck, tap gently with the palm of your hand—do not pry into the aluminum sealing surface.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material.
  • Spray brake cleaner spray on a rag and wipe until clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum.

Step 8: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring on the new pump (match the original orientation).
  • Position the pump and hand-start all bolts using your fingers first.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 9: Reinstall the water pump pulley and serpentine belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and start the bolts by hand with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten pulley bolts evenly with a 10mm socket (snug, then recheck after belt is on).
  • Route the belt, then use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slide the belt into place.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reinstall the fan and shroud

  • Lower the fan and shroud back into place carefully.
  • Install the four fan nuts using the fan clutch wrench set 12mm (specialty).
  • Reinstall shroud bolts with a 10mm socket and clips with the trim clip removal tool.

Step 11: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Close the radiator drain cock by hand (snug only).
  • Fill the radiator with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed 50/50) using a funnel.
  • Fill the overflow reservoir to the “FULL” line.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Start the engine, set the heater to max heat, and let it idle.
  • As it warms up, top off coolant as the level drops. Watch for bubbles.
  • When the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot), keep topping off until stable.
  • Install the radiator cap and let it reach normal operating temp, then shut it off and let it cool fully.
  • Recheck radiator level (cold) and reservoir level, and top off if needed.

Step 12: Reinstall the skid plate

  • Reinstall the skid plate using a 12mm socket and ratchet.
  • Tighten securely (do not strip the threads).

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the water pump and under the SUV while idling.
  • Verify the heater blows hot (this helps confirm coolant flow and less trapped air).
  • Watch the temperature gauge on your first drive; pull over if it rises abnormally.
  • After 1–2 heat cycles (full warm-up then full cool-down), recheck coolant level in the reservoir and top off.
  • Inspect the belt tracking: it should run centered on pulleys with no squeal.
