🔧 TITAN XD - Water Pump Replacement

On your TITAN XD’s 5.6L V8, the water pump is mounted behind the front timing cover and is driven by the timing chain. Replacing it is a major job because you must remove the front cover and carefully keep engine timing aligned to avoid serious engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 8-12 hours

Assumption: This procedure covers the 5.6L chain-driven water pump design used on your TITAN XD.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the truck on jack stands; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental cranking.
  • ⚠️ Keep timing chains and sprockets aligned; incorrect timing can bend valves.
  • ⚠️ Keep RTV/sealant out of oil passages; a blocked passage can ruin the engine.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty)
  • Gasket scraper
  • Plastic razor blade scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop towels
  • Paint marker
  • Cam/crank holding tool set (specialty)
  • Cooling system vacuum fill tool (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket/O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Front timing cover gasket set - Qty: 1
  • RTV silicone sealant (engine timing cover rated) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Nissan-compatible long life) - Qty: 12-16 liters
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat and gasket - Qty: 1
  • Radiator hose clamps - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Raise the front and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the frame points.
  • Set up a clean workspace for bolts; use labeled bags so front cover bolts go back in the same locations.
  • Take photos as you go.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 12-liter) under the radiator drain.
  • Open the radiator drain and remove the radiator cap to vent, using pliers only if needed for clamps.
  • Dispose of old coolant safely; it’s toxic to people and pets.

Step 2: Remove skid plates and lower splash shields

  • Remove undercovers using a trim clip removal tool and socket set (10mm-14mm).
  • Set clips aside; broken clips should be replaced.

Step 3: Remove the intake ducting (for access)

  • Loosen clamps using a socket set (8mm-10mm) and remove the intake tube.

Step 4: Remove the fan shroud and engine cooling fan

  • Unbolt the shroud using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the fan/clutch assembly using wrench set (large sizes as equipped).
  • Lift the fan and shroud out carefully to avoid radiator damage.

Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Rotate the tensioner using a serpentine belt tool and slip the belt off.
  • Draw the belt routing first.

Step 6: Remove front accessories as needed for timing cover access

  • Remove accessory mounting bolts using a socket set (12mm-14mm) and ratchet (3/8").
  • Move components aside without stressing hoses/wiring; support with zip ties (do not let them hang).

Step 7: Remove the crank pulley (harmonic balancer)

  • Break loose the crank bolt using a breaker bar (1/2") and socket set (large size as equipped).
  • Use a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty) to pull the pulley off. (This tool bolts to the pulley and pushes it off the crank snout.)
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual) when reinstalling the crank bolt.

Step 8: Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) and mark timing

  • Rotate the engine by hand using a ratchet (1/2") on the crank bolt until timing marks align at TDC.
  • Mark chain and sprocket relationships using a paint marker (even if factory links exist).
  • Install a cam/crank holding tool set (specialty) if available to prevent movement.

Step 9: Remove the front timing cover

  • Remove perimeter bolts using a socket set (10mm-14mm).
  • Carefully separate the cover using a plastic razor blade scraper and gasket scraper; do not gouge aluminum surfaces.
  • Clean old sealant using brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual) for timing cover bolts on reassembly (bolt lengths vary).

Step 10: Relieve chain tension and remove the water pump

  • Release or pin the timing chain tensioner using hand tools from your socket set (10mm-12mm) as required.
  • Remove water pump fasteners using a socket set (10mm-12mm).
  • Remove the pump and gasket/O-ring. Expect more coolant to spill; keep the drain pan (at least 12-liter) underneath.
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual) for the water pump bolts (aluminum threads strip easily).

Step 11: Install the new water pump

  • Clean the sealing surface with a plastic razor blade scraper and wipe with brake cleaner spray.
  • Install the new water pump gasket/O-ring and mount the pump evenly by hand-starting all bolts.
  • Tighten bolts in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench (10-100 Nm range).
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual).

Step 12: Reinstall chain tension and verify timing marks

  • Reinstall/activate the tensioner using socket set (10mm-12mm).
  • Verify your paint marks and factory timing marks still align.
  • Rotate the engine by hand two full turns using a ratchet (1/2") and re-check alignment.
  • If it binds, stop immediately.

Step 13: Reinstall the timing cover with RTV

  • Apply RTV silicone sealant (engine timing cover rated) only where required (joints/corners) and install the cover.
  • Install bolts finger-tight first, then tighten evenly using a torque wrench (10-100 Nm range).
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual).

Step 14: Reinstall the crank pulley and accessories

  • Reinstall the crank pulley, then tighten the crank bolt using a torque wrench (80-250 Nm range).
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual).
  • Reinstall accessory brackets using a socket set (12mm-14mm) and torque wrench (10-100 Nm range).
  • Torque to factory spec (Nissan service manual).

Step 15: Reinstall belt, fan, intake, and splash shields

  • Install the belt using a serpentine belt tool.
  • Reinstall the fan/shroud using a 10mm socket and wrench set.
  • Reinstall intake ducting using a socket set (8mm-10mm).
  • Reinstall skid plates/undercovers using a socket set (10mm-14mm) and trim clip removal tool.

Step 16: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Refill with engine coolant (Nissan-compatible long life) using a funnel.
  • Best method: use a cooling system vacuum fill tool (specialty) to avoid air pockets. (It pulls a vacuum, then sucks coolant in.)
  • If filling normally, fill slowly, start the engine, set heat to HOT, and top off as air purges.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle while watching the temperature gauge.
  • Check for coolant leaks at the timing cover, water pump area, and hoses with a flashlight.
  • Verify cabin heat works; no heat can mean trapped air.
  • After a full cool-down, recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
  • Clean any spilled coolant and recheck for drips the next morning.
