🔧 IS - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and turbo cooling system. When it leaks or the bearing wears out, you can lose coolant and overheat, so replacement is important to protect the engine.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant reservoir/radiator drain when hot; let the engine cool completely.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause belt slip and squeal.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools clear of the cooling fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extensions (3" and 6")
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (10–100 Nm range)
  • Pliers
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop towels
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota/Lexus Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully (best is overnight).
  • Raise the front with a floor jack and set it on jack stands at the factory lift points.
  • Have a clean drain pan ready for coolant.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower engine cover (undertray)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any 10mm bolts.
  • Set the cover and hardware aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 2: Drain the engine coolant

  • Position the drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly open the coolant reservoir cap by hand (only if the engine is stone-cold).
  • Open the radiator drain using pliers if needed (some drains are hand-turn; do not force).
  • Let coolant fully drain, then close the drain.
  • Keep coolant off the serpentine belt.

Step 3: Relieve serpentine belt tension and remove the belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner and unload the belt.
  • Slide the belt off one smooth pulley first, then remove it fully.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin ratchet made for tight spaces.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Use a 10mm socket (common) or 12mm socket (some variants) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley wants to spin, hold it by hand pressure while cracking the bolts loose (do not pry on it).
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Place shop towels under the pump area to catch leftover coolant.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extensions to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Carefully pull the pump away; expect more coolant to spill into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old gasket/O-ring.

Step 6: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove any gasket residue from the engine mating surface.
  • Spray a little brake cleaner spray on a shop towel and wipe the surface clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 7: Install the new water pump and gasket/O-ring

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match the old setup).
  • Position the pump and hand-start all bolts using your fingers (prevents cross-threading).
  • Use a torque wrench (10–100 Nm range) to tighten bolts in an even, crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to Lexus OEM specification (verify in service information for your exact fasteners).
  • Snug all bolts first, then final-torque.

Step 8: Reinstall the water pump pulley

  • Reinstall the pulley and start bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench (10–100 Nm range) to finish tightening.
  • Torque to Lexus OEM specification (verify in service information).

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slide the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Double-check the belt ribs are seated in every grooved pulley.

Step 10: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Insert a funnel into the coolant reservoir and fill with Toyota/Lexus Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed).
  • Start the engine and set the heater to MAX heat (this helps move coolant through the heater core).
  • Let the engine idle and watch the coolant level; add coolant as it drops.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect around the pump for leaks while it runs.
  • Once warm, shut the engine off, let it cool, then recheck and top off to the proper level.
  • Air burps out slowly—be patient.

Step 11: Reinstall the undertray and lower the car

  • Reinstall the undertray using the trim clip removal tool for clips and a 10mm socket for bolts.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower the car.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks with the engine running and after shutdown (look under the front of the car).
  • After your first short drive, let it cool and recheck coolant level; top off as needed.
  • Watch the temperature gauge for any overheating.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly (most parts stores accept waste fluids).
