šŸ”§ Accent - Water Pump Replacement

You’ll drain the coolant, remove the drive belt, unbolt the water pump, and install a new pump with a new seal. A leaking or noisy water pump can cause overheating, so replacing it promptly helps protect your engine.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: 1.6L belt-driven water pump; torque values can vary—verify if you have factory specs.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; let it cool fully.
  • āš ļø Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • āš ļø Coolant is toxic; use a drain pan and keep away from kids/pets.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt/tensioner area.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is recommended if working near the alternator wiring.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (5–80 Nm range)
  • 3" and 6" socket extensions
  • Serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench
  • Trim clip remover
  • Plastic scraper
  • Shop rags

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (seal) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Asian vehicle, phosphate OAT, 50/50 premix) - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn/cracked)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Let the engine cool completely (radiator hose should feel cool).
  • 🧰 Remove the coolant reservoir/radiator cap only after it’s cool.
  • 🧰 If disconnecting the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and access the splash shield

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the car at the proper jacking point.
  • Set the car down on jack stands and confirm it’s stable.
  • Remove the lower splash shield/undercover fasteners using a trim clip remover and 10mm socket.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant cap (cool engine only).
  • Open the radiator drain cock (if equipped) and drain the coolant into the pan.
  • If there’s no drain cock access, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp carefully and drain into the pan. Go slow to control the flow.

Step 3: Remove the accessory drive belt

  • Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley).
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench on the tensioner hex and rotate to relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it fully and note the belt routing.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley from turning by keeping slight tension on the belt (if still installed) or by hand while loosening bolts carefully.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the pulley bolts, then remove the pulley.
  • When reinstalling, Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for typical small pulley bolts.

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Place rags under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket (bolt heads can vary by location).
  • Pull the water pump straight off. If it’s stuck, tap gently with the palm of your hand—do not pry hard on the sealing surface.

Step 6: Clean the mating surface

  • Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material without scratching the metal.
  • Wipe clean with shop rags until the surface is smooth and dry.
  • A clean surface prevents leaks.

Step 7: Install the new water pump and seal

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new water pump (match the original orientation).
  • Set the pump in place and hand-thread all bolts first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket/12mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs) for typical water pump small bolts.

Step 8: Reinstall pulley and belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and start all bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Route the belt correctly, then use the serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench to move the tensioner and slip the belt on.
  • Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Close the radiator drain cock (if used).
  • Use a funnel to slowly fill with Asian vehicle phosphate OAT 50/50 premix coolant.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT (this opens the heater core).
  • Let the engine idle and warm up while watching coolant level; top off as it drops.
  • Once the radiator fan cycles on/off, install the cap and shut the engine off.
  • After it cools, recheck and top off the reservoir to the MAX line.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and lower the car

  • Reinstall the undercover using a 10mm socket and trim clip remover.
  • Lift slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower the car.

āœ… After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and look underneath for leaks around the water pump and hoses.
  • 🧪 Watch the temperature gauge on a short test drive; stop if it rises abnormally.
  • 🧪 After the engine fully cools (later that day or next morning), recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • 🧪 Dispose of old coolant properly (many parts stores accept used coolant).
