How to Replace the Water Pump on a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu 1.5L Turbo (LFV)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required tools, parts list, safety tips, and coolant refill steps

🔧 Malibu - Water Pump Replacement
The water pump moves coolant through your engine and radiator to prevent overheating. On your Malibu, replacing it typically involves draining some coolant, removing the serpentine belt, unbolting the pump, and installing a new pump with a fresh seal.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.5 hours
Assumption: 1.5L turbo LFV with belt-driven water pump.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cold engine only; hot coolant can cause burns.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause belt slip.
- ⚠️ Dex-Cool coolant is toxic—clean spills immediately and keep away from pets.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep hands clear of the cooling fan (it can turn on unexpectedly).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket / seal - Qty: 1
- Coolant (Dex-Cool 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if belt is cracked/glazed)
- Replacement splash shield fasteners/clips - Qty: As needed
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool completely (ideally 2+ hours).
- 🧼 Place a drain pan under the radiator area and have rags ready.
- 📝 Take a quick photo of the belt routing sticker (usually under the hood) so re-installation is easy.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front-right corner
- Use wheel chocks to block the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack to lift at the approved front lift point.
- Set the car down onto jack stands.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (and access panel if equipped)
- Use a 7mm socket and trim clip removal tool to remove the screws/clips.
- Set the shield aside so you can reach the belt and pump area.
Step 3: Drain coolant to a safe level
- Place the drain pan under the radiator area.
- Slowly open the coolant reservoir cap to release any leftover pressure.
- Drain coolant from the radiator drain (if accessible) or by carefully loosening the lower hose clamp using pliers (hose clamp pliers).
- Drain enough so the coolant level sits below the water pump height.
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt
- The serpentine belt is the single long belt that drives accessories (alternator, A/C, water pump).
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive breaker bar to rotate the belt tensioner and relieve tension.
- Slip the belt off one pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Remove the belt and set it aside (or replace it if you bought a new one).
Step 5: Remove hoses or lines blocking the water pump (as needed)
- Use pliers (hose clamp pliers) to move spring clamps back on any hose connected to the pump.
- Gently twist the hose to break it free, then pull it off.
- Use shop rags to catch any remaining coolant.
Step 6: Unbolt and remove the water pump
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extensions to remove the water pump bolts.
- Remove bolts evenly and keep track of their positions if lengths vary.
- Pull the pump straight off. If it’s stuck, tap gently by hand—do not pry hard against aluminum surfaces.
Step 7: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material or seal residue from the engine surface.
- Wipe clean with shop rags so the surface is dry and smooth.
- Don’t gouge aluminum—scrape gently.
Step 8: Install the new water pump and seal
- Install the new water pump gasket / seal onto the new pump (match orientation exactly).
- Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Final-tighten using a torque wrench to the manufacturer specification for your bolt set.
Step 9: Reconnect hoses and re-install the serpentine belt
- Reinstall any hoses and clamps using pliers (hose clamp pliers).
- Route the belt using the under-hood belt routing diagram.
- Rotate the tensioner with a 15mm socket and breaker bar, slip the belt into place, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the splash shield using a 7mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
- Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower the vehicle.
Step 11: Refill coolant
- Use a funnel to fill the reservoir with Dex-Cool 50/50 premix to the correct level line.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to HOT and fan on low.
- 🕵️ Check for leaks around the pump and hoses while it warms up.
- 🌡️ Let the engine reach normal operating temperature; watch the temperature gauge for any overheating.
- 🌀 After the engine cools completely, recheck coolant level and top off with Dex-Cool 50/50 premix as needed.
- 🔩 If you removed a wheel for access: torque lug nuts in a star pattern to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
