🔧 Envision - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing fails, the engine can overheat quickly, so replacement is important to protect the turbo engine.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

Assumption: your 2.0L turbo uses a belt-driven external water pump.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Do this only on a fully cold engine to avoid burns from hot coolant.
  • 🛑 The electric cooling fan can turn on unexpectedly; keep hands/tools clear.
  • 🛑 Support the SUV with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🛑 Clean up spilled coolant immediately; it’s toxic and slippery.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is recommended when working near the fan and belt drive.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs)
  • 1/4" drive torque wrench (50-250 in-lbs)
  • Socket set: 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Pliers (hose clamp pliers)
  • Pick tool
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop towels
  • Cooling system vacuum fill tool (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Dex-Cool compatible) 50/50 premix - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamp set - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Let the engine cool completely, then slowly open the coolant surge tank cap to release any leftover pressure.
  • 🧰 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and move it aside.
  • 🧰 Raise the front of the SUV using a floor jack and support it on jack stands.
  • 🧰 Remove the lower splash shield using a 7mm socket and trim clip removal tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the radiator drain (or lower hose connection) carefully using pliers (hose clamp pliers) as needed.
  • Open the surge tank cap to help it drain faster.
  • Keep coolant off belts and pulleys.

Step 2: Remove the air ducting for access

  • Remove the intake snorkel/duct clamps using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.
  • Move the ducting out of the way so you can reach the belt drive area.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Note the belt routing (take a photo).
  • Rotate the belt tensioner using a serpentine belt tool to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley, then remove it completely.
  • If removing the tensioner fastener for any reason: Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Hold the pulley and remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • On installation: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Disconnect hoses from the water pump

  • Use pliers (hose clamp pliers) to slide the clamps back.
  • Twist the hose gently to break it loose (use a pick tool carefully if stuck, without gouging the hose).
  • Pull the hose off and expect some coolant to spill into the drain pan.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 13mm socket as needed.
  • Pull the pump straight off the engine.
  • Clean the mating surface using a plastic gasket scraper, then wipe with brake cleaner spray on shop towels.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum surface.

Step 7: Install the new water pump and seal

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (lightly wet an O-ring with fresh coolant so it doesn’t pinch).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly using a 1/4" drive torque wrench (50-250 in-lbs).
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for water pump bolts.

Step 8: Reinstall pulley, hoses, and belt

  • Reinstall the water pump pulley using a 10mm socket, then Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect hoses and position clamps using pliers (hose clamp pliers).
  • Route the serpentine belt correctly, rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool, and slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Double-check the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the SUV

  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using a 7mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
  • Lower the SUV from the jack stands using the floor jack.

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Refill the surge tank with Dex-Cool compatible 50/50 premix using a funnel until it reaches the proper level.
  • If you have one, use a cooling system vacuum fill tool (specialty) to reduce air pockets (air trapped in the system can cause overheating).
  • Start the engine and set the HVAC to full hot (this opens the heater circuit).
  • Let the engine idle while you watch the temperature gauge and coolant level.
  • Top off as the level drops. Reinstall the cap once the level stabilizes.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check carefully for leaks around the pump and hoses with the engine running.
  • ✅ Verify the heater blows hot and the temperature gauge stays normal.
  • ✅ After a full cool-down, recheck the coolant level and top off if needed.
  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal or grinding; shut off immediately if heard.
