🔧 Soul - Water Pump Replacement

On your Soul, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it involves draining some coolant, removing the accessory drive belt, unbolting the pump, and refilling/bleeding the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never open the coolant cap hot; wait until fully cool.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; coolant is toxic and slippery.
  • 🧯 Keep coolant off belts and pulleys to prevent belt slip.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended if your hands/tools will be near the alternator electrical connections.
  • 🧰 Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Socket set (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm)
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Box wrench (14mm)
  • Torque wrench (10–100 Nm range)
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop rags
  • Funnel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1 (recommended while you’re in there)
  • Kia/Hyundai long-life coolant (Asian P-OAT) 50/50 premix - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Distilled water - Qty: 1 gallon (only if mixing concentrate)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Soul on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (ideally overnight).
  • Remove the radiator cap only when cool to release any residual pressure.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the right-front wheel

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front-right jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the right-front wheel using a 21mm socket (if your lug size differs, use the socket that fits snugly).

Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield (inner fender)

  • Remove clips/screws using a trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and 10mm socket.
  • Pull the shield back to access the belt/pulleys area.

Step 3: Drain enough coolant to get below water-pump level

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the drain (or remove the lower splash access as needed) using a flat-blade screwdriver if equipped.
  • Drain until coolant flow slows, then close the drain.
  • Clean spills immediately—coolant is slippery.

Step 4: Remove the accessory drive belt (serpentine belt)

  • From the wheel-well opening, locate the belt tensioner.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool (or a 14mm box wrench if it fits your tensioner hex) to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it fully.
  • Take a quick photo of belt routing first.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • If your pump uses a separate pulley, remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket while holding the pulley steady by hand.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place rags under the pump area using shop rags to catch remaining coolant.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket (bolt heads may vary by position).
  • Gently separate the pump from the engine. If it’s stuck, tap lightly and evenly—do not pry hard on aluminum surfaces.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop rags.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum; the goal is a clean, flat surface.

Step 8: Install the new water pump and gasket/O-ring

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match the old setup exactly).
  • Position the pump and hand-start all bolts to prevent cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a ratchet (3/8" drive).
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (10–100 Nm range): Torque to 14 Nm (10 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the pulley (if removed)

  • Install the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten evenly, then final tighten with a torque wrench (10–100 Nm range): Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo (or the under-hood belt routing sticker, if equipped).
  • Rotate the tensioner using a serpentine belt tool and slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Double-check the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Reinstall the splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the inner fender using a trim clip removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket.

Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Fill the radiator/pressure tank using a funnel with Kia/Hyundai long-life coolant (Asian P-OAT) 50/50 premix.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT (fan medium) to help purge air.
  • Let the engine warm up while watching coolant level; top off as it drops.
  • Check for leaks at the pump and hose connections using a bright light and safety glasses on.
  • Once the cooling fan cycles and heat blows hot, shut off, let cool, and recheck level. Top off as needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after your first 10–15 minute drive and again the next morning.
  • Confirm the temperature gauge stays normal and cabin heat is steady (no sudden cold air).
  • Verify the coolant level in the reservoir after the engine fully cools; top off if needed.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly (most parts stores accept it).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
