🔧 Elantra - Water Pump Replacement

On your Elantra, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it means draining coolant, removing the drive belt and pump, installing the new pump with a new seal, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.0-3.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Only work on a fully cool engine (hot coolant can cause severe burns).
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off paint, belts, and the alternator; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Dispose of used coolant properly (it’s toxic to people and pets).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep hands/tools clear of the radiator fan (it can turn on unexpectedly).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Plastic trim clip remover
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Extension set (3/8")
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm wrench
  • Torque wrench (3/8")
  • Gasket scraper (plastic)
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket/O-ring (pump seal) - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if belt is worn/cracked)
  • Engine coolant (Asian/Hyundai/Kia P-OAT 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2 gallons

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool completely (upper radiator hose should feel cool).
  • 🧰 Lay out bolts in order as you remove them (a cardboard “bolt map” helps).
  • 📦 If your new pump includes a new gasket/O-ring, use that (don’t reuse the old seal).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower splash shield

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front jack point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower the car onto them.
  • Remove the lower engine splash shield fasteners using a plastic trim clip remover and a 10mm socket.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain.
  • Slowly loosen the radiator cap to release any residual pressure.
  • Open the radiator drain and let coolant drain fully into the pan.

Step 3: Remove the drive belt

  • From the passenger side of the engine bay, locate the belt tensioner.
  • Use a 17mm wrench to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off a pulley.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and set it aside.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo of belt routing.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley from turning by keeping tension on it with your hand, and remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • During reassembly: Torque water pump pulley bolts to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the pump area (more coolant will spill).
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket (bolt heads vary by position).
  • Pull the water pump straight off the engine. If it’s stuck, tap it gently to break the seal (do not pry hard on the aluminum surface).

Step 6: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a gasket scraper (plastic) and shop towels to clean the engine’s mating surface until it’s smooth and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 7: Install the new water pump and seal

  • Install the new water pump gasket/O-ring (pump seal) onto the new water pump as supplied.
  • Position the pump on the engine and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket/12mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench (3/8").
  • Torque water pump mounting bolts to 11 Nm (8 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and drive belt

  • Install the pulley and hand-thread the bolts, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque water pump pulley bolts to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
  • Route the belt over all pulleys except the easiest last pulley.
  • Use a 17mm wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt on, then release tension slowly.
  • Double-check the belt is seated in every pulley groove (no ribs hanging off).

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the car

  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using a 10mm socket and plastic trim clip remover.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the car.

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill the radiator/expansion tank with Engine coolant (Asian/Hyundai/Kia P-OAT 50/50 premix).
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle until it reaches normal temperature; watch for leaks around the pump.
  • As the level drops, top off coolant. Use shop towels to catch small spills.
  • Once the radiator fan cycles, shut the engine off and let it cool, then recheck and top off again.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Check carefully for leaks at the pump and under the car with the engine running.
  • 🌡️ Confirm the temperature gauge stays normal during a 10–15 minute test drive.
  • 🧴 Recheck coolant level after the engine fully cools (same day or next morning) and top off if needed.
  • 🔍 If you hear belt squeal, recheck belt routing and that it’s seated in all grooves.
