🔧 2500 - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your 2500’s engine and radiator. When the pump leaks, gets noisy, or stops flowing well, the engine can overheat quickly—so replacement needs to be done carefully and followed by a proper refill/bleed.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray out.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the fan and belt path at all times.
  • ⚠️ Support the truck safely if you raise it; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
  • 🔋 If you’ll be working close to the fan/clutch area, disconnect the negative battery cable.

🔧 Required Tools

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully (at least 2–3 hours if it was hot).
  • Place a large drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • If equipped with a mechanical fan clutch: a fan clutch wrench set is the correct tool (it holds the pulley while you loosen the fan nut).
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a wrench to remove the negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Remove the coolant reservoir cap only after the engine is cool.
  • Position the drain pan under the radiator.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) using a flathead screwdriver if needed, and let coolant drain.
  • Close the drain once flow slows to a drip.

Step 2: Remove the intake duct (if it blocks access)

  • Loosen the clamps with an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.
  • Unclip/remove any attached hoses or connectors by hand, then lift the duct out.

Step 3: Remove the fan shroud and fan (mechanical fan setup)

  • Remove upper shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket and release any clips with a trim clip remover.
  • Use a fan clutch wrench set (specialty) to loosen the fan clutch nut at the water pump hub.
  • Lift the fan and shroud out together carefully so you don’t hit the radiator fins.
  • Tip: Cardboard protects the radiator fins.

Step 4: Relieve and remove the serpentine belt

  • Note the belt routing (take a photo).
  • Rotate the belt tensioner using a serpentine belt tool or 1/2" breaker bar, then slide the belt off a smooth pulley.
  • Remove the belt from the water pump pulley area and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped as a separate pulley)

  • Hold the pulley from turning by hand and remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 6: Disconnect hoses from the water pump

  • Use pliers (hose clamp) to slide the clamps back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently to break it loose, then pull it off.
  • Have shop towels ready for remaining coolant.

Step 7: Remove the water pump

  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using the appropriate socket set (8mm–15mm) depending on bolt head size.
  • Remove the pump from the timing cover/front cover.
  • Clean the mating surface using a plastic gasket scraper and shop towels.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/seal onto the new pump (dry unless the gasket instructions say otherwise).
  • Position the pump and hand-start all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 3/8" torque wrench.
  • Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs)

Step 9: Reinstall pulley, belt, fan, and shroud

  • Reinstall the water pump pulley and start bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten pulley bolts using a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)
  • Route the serpentine belt per your photo, rotate tensioner with a serpentine belt tool or 1/2" breaker bar, and slip the belt into place.
  • Reinstall the fan/shroud assembly using the fan clutch wrench set (specialty) and tighten the shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the intake duct and tighten clamps using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Open the coolant reservoir and fill slowly using a funnel (spill-free coolant funnel kit) with Engine coolant (Mopar OAT, 50/50 premix).
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT with the blower on low.
  • Let it idle and watch the temperature gauge; add coolant as the level drops.
  • Once the thermostat opens (upper radiator hose gets hot), continue topping off until the level stabilizes.
  • Shut the engine off, let it cool, then recheck and top off again.

✅ After Repair

  • Inspect for leaks around the pump gasket, hose connections, and radiator drain while idling.
  • Verify the heater blows hot and the temperature gauge stays normal on a 10–15 minute drive.
  • After the next full cool-down, recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly (most parts stores accept it).
