🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

This replacement removes the belt-driven water pump, drains the coolant, and installs a new pump with fresh seals and coolant. On your CX-5, taking your time with hose clamps and bleed-out is the key to avoiding leaks and overheating later.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a fully cooled engine. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Keep hands, tools, and clothing clear of the drive belt area.
  • Use a drain pan and dispose of coolant properly.
  • If the electric cooling fan can run unexpectedly, disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the fan area.
  • Do not reuse a damaged gasket or O-ring. A small seep will become a major leak.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Socket extension set
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Funnel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket or O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 1 gallon equivalent
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Water pump bolts - Qty: 1 set, if corrosion or damage is present

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will be working near the fan or belt path.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands if needed for access to the splash shield.
  • Have a clean drain pan ready before opening the cooling system.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold.
  • Place the drain pan under the radiator drain area and open the drain using the correct hand access for your CX-5.
  • Let the coolant drain fully before moving to the pump area.
  • Keep pets away from coolant.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Use the 10mm socket and flat-blade trim tool to remove the fasteners and retainers from the lower engine cover.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Remove the drive belt

  • Use the 14mm socket or the correct belt tensioner tool on the tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, then slip the belt off the water pump pulley.
  • Inspect the belt. Replace it if cracked, glazed, or oil-soaked.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use the 10mm socket to remove the pulley bolts.
  • Hold the pulley steady by hand while removing the last bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • Torque on installation: 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Use the 12mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Break the pump free gently and pull it straight off the engine.
  • If it sticks, tap lightly with a plastic tool. Do not pry on the sealing surface.
  • Remove the old gasket or O-ring with a pick tool.

Step 6: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use a clean rag to wipe the engine mating surface.
  • Make sure no old gasket material remains.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum surface.
  • A clean surface prevents leaks.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket or O-ring on the replacement pump.
  • Position the pump on the engine and start all bolts by hand with the 12mm socket.
  • Snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque the water pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Install the pulley with the 10mm socket.
  • Torque the pulley bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Route the new or reused serpentine belt according to the belt path.
  • Use the 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
  • Make sure the belt sits fully in every groove.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Install the lower cover using the 10mm socket and trim tool.
  • Make sure all clips and screws are back in place.

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct Mazda-spec coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to HOT and the fan on low.
  • Watch the coolant level and top off as air escapes.
  • Torque on radiator drain after closing: hand-tight plus snug; do not overtighten.

Step 11: Check for leaks

  • Look around the pump, hose connections, and drain area while the engine runs.
  • Verify the belt tracks straight and the pulley turns smoothly.
  • Shut the engine off and recheck the coolant level after cool-down.

✅ After Repair

  • Road test the CX-5 and watch the temperature gauge.
  • Recheck coolant level after the first heat cycle and again the next day.
  • Inspect under the front of the vehicle for any dried coolant stains.
  • If you replaced the belt, listen for squeaks or chirps during acceleration.
