🔧 Water Pump - Replacement
The water pump circulates coolant through your engine. If it’s leaking, noisy, or the engine has been overheating, replacing it will restore proper cooling and help prevent serious engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the belt or working near the cooling fan.
- Use proper jack stands if you need under-vehicle access. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Dispose of used coolant properly. It is toxic to people, pets, and wildlife.
- Do not run the engine with low coolant. Air pockets can cause overheating quickly.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise the front of the vehicle if you need more access to the belt and lower splash shield.
- Open the radiator cap only when the engine is cold.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Use a pick tool or hand pressure to open the radiator drain if equipped.
- Drain enough coolant to get the level below the water pump.
- Keep coolant away from pets.
Step 2: Remove the engine undercover
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch breaker bar to release tension from the belt tensioner.
- Slide the belt off the pulleys and remove it.
- If the belt is cracked or glazed, replace it.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the pulley bolts.
- Remove the pulley and keep the bolts organized.
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
- Break the pump loose gently and remove it from the engine.
- Watch for more coolant to spill as the pump comes off.
Step 6: Clean the mounting surface
- Use a gasket scraper to clean the engine sealing surface.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
- Wipe the area clean so the new gasket seals properly.
- A clean surface prevents leaks.
Step 7: Install the new water pump
- Position the new water pump gasket and new pump in place.
- Start all bolts by hand with a 10mm socket or by hand using the ratchet.
- Tighten the water pump bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the pulley
- Install the water pump pulley.
- Use a 12mm socket to tighten the bolts.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the drive belt
- Route the new or existing belt exactly as originally installed.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to release the tensioner.
- Make sure the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reinstall the undercover and lower the vehicle
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield.
- Lower the vehicle safely if it was raised.
Step 11: Refill the cooling system
- Use a funnel to fill the cooling system with the correct coolant.
- Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
- Install the cap once filled.
Step 12: Bleed the air out and check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to HOT.
- Watch the coolant level and top off as needed.
- Inspect the water pump, hose connections, and drain area for leaks.
- Let the engine reach operating temperature, then shut it off and recheck the level after it cools.
- Recheck coolant after the first drive.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the temperature gauge stays normal on a test drive.
- Check for coolant leaks after the engine cools again.
- Recheck coolant level the next day and top off if needed.
- If the engine overheated before repair, inspect the radiator cap, hoses, and thermostat too.
