🔧 Rogue - Water Pump Replacement
You’ll be removing the drive belt and the water pump on the front of the engine, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system. This restores proper engine cooling and prevents overheating or leaks.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before starting; hot coolant can cause serious burns.
- ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap or reservoir cap when the engine is hot.
- ⚠️ Support the front of your Rogue securely with jack stands; never rely only on a floor jack.
- ⚠️ Keep coolant away from children and pets; it is poisonous and has a sweet taste.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable if you’ll have hands near the radiator fan; it can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Dispose of old coolant properly; do not pour it on the ground or down drains.

- 🔩 Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
- 🔩 Nissan-compatible coolant (blue long-life, premixed 50/50) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
- 🔩 Water pump mounting bolts (optional new hardware) - Qty: 1 set
- 🔩 Radiator drain plug gasket (if separate) - Qty: 1
- 🔩 Hose clamps (replacement, if any are rusty or damaged) - Qty: as needed
- 🔩 RTV silicone sealant (coolant-safe, if specified with pump) - Qty: 1 tube
- 🔩 Shop towels - Qty: 1 pack
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Make sure the engine is completely cool (ideally sitting for several hours).
- Open the hood and locate the coolant reservoir so you know where it is later.
- If you want extra safety around the cooling fan, disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Have your new pump and gasket ready and laid out on a clean surface so you can compare them to the old parts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the Rogue
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the front jacking point shown in your owner’s manual.
- Place jack stands under the proper support points on both sides and gently lower the vehicle onto them.
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires to prevent rolling.
- Shake the vehicle slightly to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the right front wheel and splash shield
- Use the socket set (usually 21mm) and ratchet to remove the lug nuts on the right front wheel, then remove the wheel.
- Use a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver to remove the plastic clips and screws holding the right front inner fender/splash shield.
- Pull the splash shield out to expose the side of the engine and the drive belt area.
Step 3: Drain the coolant
- Position a drain pan under the radiator drain plug (bottom of the radiator).
- Use the appropriate socket or Phillips screwdriver to open the radiator drain plug and let coolant flow into the pan.
- Slowly loosen the reservoir cap by hand to help coolant drain faster, if the engine is cool.
- After draining, close the drain plug using the same tool. Torque to about 3–5 Nm (hand snug; do not overtighten).
Step 4: Remove the serpentine drive belt
- Note the belt routing or take a clear photo before removal.
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley on the front of the engine).
- Use the serpentine belt tool or long-handled 3/8" breaker bar on the tensioner square hole or bolt to rotate it and relieve belt tension.
- While holding tension off, slide the belt off one pulley by hand, then gently release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt completely from all pulleys.
Step 5: Access the water pump area
- The water pump on your Rogue is mounted on the front of the engine block and driven by the belt.
- If any small brackets or hoses block access, use the socket set or pliers to move them aside carefully and remember their positions.
- Use a work light or flashlight to clearly see the pump and bolts.
Step 6: Remove the old water pump
- Place the drain pan under the pump area to catch any remaining coolant.
- Use the appropriate socket (typically 10mm) and 1/4" ratchet to remove all water pump mounting bolts.
- Gently tap the pump housing with the handle of a hammer or screwdriver if it’s stuck, then pull it away from the engine.
- Let any remaining coolant drain into the pan.
Step 7: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a plastic scraper to carefully remove old gasket material or sealant from the engine block surface.
- Wipe the area with brake cleaner spray and shop rags until it is clean and smooth.
- Do not let debris fall inside the engine passages.
Step 8: Prepare the new water pump
- Compare the new pump to the old one to confirm bolt holes and shape match.
- Install the new gasket or O-ring onto the pump as directed by the instructions.
- If Nissan or the pump instructions call for RTV, apply a thin continuous bead with the RTV silicone sealant only where specified.
Step 9: Install the new water pump
- Position the new pump onto the engine, aligning the bolt holes.
- Install the bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to snug all bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
- Then use the torque wrench 3/8" drive with 10mm socket to tighten each bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) in a crisscross pattern.
Step 10: Reinstall any removed brackets or hoses
- Use the socket set, wrenches, and pliers to reinstall any brackets, sensors, or hoses you moved aside.
- Ensure all hose clamps are tight using pliers or a screwdriver.
Step 11: Install the new serpentine belt
- Route the new belt according to your photo or the under-hood diagram.
- Use the serpentine belt tool or breaker bar on the tensioner to rotate it and create slack.
- Slide the belt onto the final pulley, then gently release the tensioner to apply tension.
- Check all pulleys to make sure the belt is seated fully in each groove.
Step 12: Reinstall the splash shield and wheel
- Reinstall the inner fender/splash shield using the trim clip removal tool (to help press clips back) and Phillips screwdriver for screws.
- Reinstall the wheel using the socket (about 21mm) and ratchet, snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Use the torque wrench with correct socket to tighten wheel lug nuts to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 13: Refill the cooling system
- Make sure the radiator drain plug is closed (snug, not overtightened).
- Use a funnel to slowly fill the coolant reservoir with Nissan-compatible premixed coolant.
- On this Rogue, the system is filled mainly through the reservoir; fill to the “MAX” line.
- Have extra coolant ready; air pockets will burp out.
Step 14: Bleed air from the cooling system
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative cable with a 10mm socket and torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) (snug).
- Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to maximum heat and fan on low.
- Watch the coolant level in the reservoir; as air escapes, the level may drop—add coolant as needed using the funnel.
- Let the engine reach normal operating temperature; the radiator fan should cycle on and off.
- Check for leaks around the water pump and hose connections using a work light.
- Turn the engine off and let it cool completely, then recheck and top off coolant to the “MAX” line if needed.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and verify there are no abnormal noises from the belt or pump area.
- Check again for coolant leaks under the front of your Rogue and around the pump after a short test drive.
- Monitor engine temperature gauge during the first few drives; it should stay in the normal range.
- Recheck coolant level over the next 1–2 days and top off to the “MAX” line if it drops slightly as remaining air bleeds out.
