🔧 Cherokee - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing fails, you can overheat quickly, so replacing it restores reliable cooling and prevents engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.5 hours

Assumption: 2.4L belt-driven water pump; verify torque specs with service info.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; wait until fully cool.
  • ⚠️ Support the Cherokee with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools away from the radiator fan; it can start unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable if your hands will be near the fan/serpentine belt.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Spill-free funnel kit (specialty)
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Socket set metric 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Pliers (hose clamp pliers preferred)
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop rags
  • 19mm socket
  • Breaker bar (1/2" drive)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (OAT, 50/50 premix or concentrate + distilled water) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 Optional but smart if worn/cracked
  • Hose clamp(s) - Qty: 1-2 Optional if originals are weak

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely (cool upper radiator hose to the touch).
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • If you’ll work near the fan/belt area, disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front-right and remove the wheel

  • Loosen the right-front lug nuts using a 19mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Lift at the proper jacking point using a floor jack, then set the Cherokee securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and wheel with the 19mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the splash shield/inner fender access

  • Remove the fasteners and clips using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Pull the splash shield back to access the belt/tensioner area.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any residual pressure.
  • Open the radiator drain (if equipped) using a flat-blade screwdriver, or remove the lower radiator hose clamp using pliers and carefully pull the hose free.
  • Let coolant drain fully, then close the drain or reinstall the hose loosely to prevent drips while you work.

Step 4: Remove the air intake duct (if it blocks access)

  • Loosen intake clamps using an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Unclip/remove the duct and set it aside.

Step 5: Release serpentine belt tension and remove the belt

  • Fit a 15mm socket and ratchet (or serpentine belt tool (specialty)) onto the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off a smooth pulley first.
  • Remove the belt from the water pump pulley area and set it aside.
  • If the belt is cracked/glazed, replace it.

Step 6: Disconnect hoses from the water pump

  • Position the drain pan under the water pump area for remaining coolant.
  • Use pliers to compress and slide the hose clamps back.
  • Twist the hose gently to break it free, then pull it off the pump.
  • Stuck hose? Twist—don’t pry hard on plastic fittings.

Step 7: Remove the water pump

  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket (bolt head size varies by pump design).
  • Support the pump with one hand as you remove the last bolt, then pull the pump straight off.
  • Expect more coolant to spill—keep the drain pan underneath.

Step 8: Clean the sealing surface

  • Remove old gasket material using a plastic gasket scraper and shop rags.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface—clean and smooth is the goal.

Step 9: Install the new water pump and gasket

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match orientation exactly).
  • Position the pump and hand-thread all bolts first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a ratchet.
  • Final-tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs) (typical small water pump fasteners).

Step 10: Reconnect hoses

  • Push hoses fully onto their fittings.
  • Reposition clamps using pliers so they sit behind the hose bead.

Step 11: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo/routing diagram.
  • Rotate the tensioner with a 15mm socket and install the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Double-check the belt is seated in every ribbed pulley groove.

Step 12: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the splash shield fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts using a 19mm socket.
  • Lower the Cherokee off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Make sure the drain is closed / hoses are secured.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir using a funnel with the correct OAT coolant.
  • Install a spill-free funnel kit (specialty) on the reservoir and fill to the proper level.
  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket if you disconnected it.
  • Start the engine and set the HVAC to maximum heat (this helps purge air).
  • Let the engine reach operating temperature and watch for air bubbles in the funnel; keep topping up as the level drops.
  • When bubbles stop and heat is steady, shut the engine off and let it cool completely, then set final level to the “FULL COLD” mark.

✅ After Repair

  • Check carefully for leaks around the water pump and hose connections with the engine running.
  • Verify the heater blows hot and the temperature gauge stays normal.
  • After the first drive and full cool-down, recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • Inspect belt tracking: it should run centered and quiet.
