🔧 Water Pump - Replacement
The water pump circulates coolant through your Corolla’s engine to keep it from overheating. On this model, replacement means draining coolant, removing the drive belt, swapping the pump, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Support the vehicle securely on jack stands if you raise it. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Keep coolant away from children and pets. It is toxic.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will be working near the starter wiring or using tools around the alternator area.
- Use caution around the drive belt and pulleys. Do not crank the engine with the belt removed.

- Have a drain pan ready before opening the cooling system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the coolant
- Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold.
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area and open the drain cock.
- Drain enough coolant so the level is below the water pump.
Step 2: Remove the engine undercover
- Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim tool to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield aside.
Step 3: Remove the drive belt
- Use the serpentine belt tool to relieve tension from the belt tensioner.
- Slip the belt off the pulleys and remove it from the engine bay.
- Take a photo of the belt path first.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the pulley bolts.
- Remove the pulley from the water pump.
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
- Pull the pump straight off the engine.
- Catch any coolant that spills out.
- Remove the old gasket or seal.
Step 6: Clean the mounting surface
- Use a gasket scraper to clean the engine mounting surface.
- Wipe the area clean with a lint-free rag.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
Step 7: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket or seal on the pump.
- Position the pump on the engine.
- Hand-start all bolts first with a 12mm socket.
- Torque the water pump bolts to 10 N·m (89 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the pulley
- Install the pulley and start the bolts by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket to tighten the pulley bolts evenly.
- Torque the pulley bolts to 18 N·m (13 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the drive belt
- Route the belt exactly as it was before removal.
- Use the serpentine belt tool to move the tensioner and slide the belt into place.
- Make sure the belt is fully seated on every pulley.
Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield
- Put the engine undercover back in place.
- Use a 10mm socket and plastic trim tool to reinstall the fasteners.
Step 11: Refill coolant and bleed the system
- Use a funnel to fill the cooling system with the correct Toyota coolant.
- Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
- Start the engine with the radiator cap off and set the heater to full hot.
- Let the engine reach operating temperature and top off coolant as the level drops.
- Install the radiator cap once no more air bubbles appear.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks at the pump, hose connections, and drain cock.
- Verify the coolant level again after the engine cools.
- Watch the temperature gauge on the test drive.
- Recheck belt tracking and listen for pulley noise.
