🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your Rogue’s engine to keep it from overheating. On the 2.5L, replacement involves draining the cooling system, removing the drive belt, and accessing the pump on the engine front cover.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a completely cool engine. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands before removing the right-front wheel and splash shield.
  • Dispose of used coolant properly. It is toxic to people and animals.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. This helps prevent accidental starts.
  • Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before opening the cooling system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before removal work.
  • Raise the right-front corner and remove the right-front wheel for access.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area before opening the system.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold.
  • Open the radiator drain and drain the coolant into a drain pan.
  • If equipped with a block drain that is accessible, drain that as well.

Step 2: Remove access components

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower engine splash shield fasteners.
  • Remove the right-front wheel if needed for better access.
  • Take off any inner fender liner fasteners blocking access to the pump area.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension and slip the belt off the pulleys.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay.
  • Take a belt routing photo first.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Break the pump free carefully and remove it from the engine.
  • Expect some coolant spillage.

Step 6: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use a pick tool and clean rags to remove old gasket material.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum sealing surface.
  • Make sure the surface is clean and dry before installation.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket on the new pump.
  • Position the pump on the engine and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 10 N·m (89 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Install the pulley and tighten the bolts with a 12mm socket.
  • Torque to 25 N·m (18 ft-lbs).
  • Route the serpentine belt correctly using your belt routing photo.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to relieve tension and slip the belt into place.

Step 9: Reassemble access parts

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to 113 N·m (83 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel or coolant filling tool (specialty) to refill with the correct coolant mix.
  • Start the engine with the heater set to full hot.
  • Let the engine reach operating temperature and watch for bubbles.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.
  • Install the radiator cap after air is purged.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for coolant leaks at the pump, hoses, and drain points.
  • Verify the engine stays at normal temperature during idle and road test.
  • Recheck coolant level after the engine cools completely.
  • Inspect the serpentine belt for correct tracking.
