🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine to keep it from overheating. On your Sierra, replacement means draining coolant, removing the belt drive components around the pump, swapping the pump, and refilling and bleeding the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a completely cold engine. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Keep hands, hair, and clothing away from the serpentine belt and pulleys.
  • Use a drain pan and dispose of coolant properly. Coolant is toxic to people and pets.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Let the engine cool overnight if possible.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Gasket scraper
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Funnel
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack and jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Thermostat housing gasket - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system.
  • Raise the front of the truck only if needed for drain access, then support it with jack stands.
  • Have a drain pan ready before opening the radiator drain.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain.
  • Use a plastic trim tool or by hand to open the radiator drain petcock if equipped.
  • Drain enough coolant so the water pump can be removed without spilling.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 15mm socket to release tension from the belt tensioner.
  • Slip the belt off the water pump pulley and remove it from the front of the engine.
  • Take a belt routing photo first.

Step 3: Remove the belt tensioner and related brackets if needed

  • Use the 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove any brackets blocking water pump access.
  • Remove the tensioner if it covers the pump mounting bolts.

Step 4: Remove the water pump

  • Use the 10mm socket and 13mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Note bolt locations and lengths as you remove them.
  • Pull the water pump straight off the engine.

Step 5: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a gasket scraper to remove all old gasket material from the engine front cover.
  • Wipe the surface clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum sealing surface.

Step 6: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new water pump gasket and position the new pump on the engine.
  • Start all bolts by hand using the 10mm socket or 13mm socket.
  • Tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall brackets, tensioner, and belt

  • Reinstall any removed brackets or the tensioner using the 13mm socket or 15mm socket.
  • Route the serpentine belt correctly using the belt routing diagram.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool to release tension and slip the belt over the final pulley.

Step 8: Refill the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct engine coolant.
  • Fill to the proper level in the surge tank.

Step 9: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to hot.
  • Watch coolant level and add more as air purges out.
  • Let the engine reach operating temperature and check for leaks.
  • Torque is not needed here, but keep the cap on loosely until air bleeding is complete if the service procedure calls for it.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks at the water pump, hoses, and drain.
  • Verify the coolant level again after the engine cools down.
  • Make sure the heater blows hot air, which helps confirm the system is full.
  • Recheck belt tracking after a short test drive.
