🔧 Fusion - Water Pump Replacement

On your Fusion, the water pump moves coolant through the engine to prevent overheating. Replacing it involves draining coolant, removing the drive belt, unbolting the pump, and refilling/bleeding the cooling system so no air pockets remain.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

Assumption: engine-mounted coolant pump (belt-driven) on the 2.0L hybrid engine.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant reservoir when hot; pressure can cause burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands before going under it.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools away from orange high-voltage wiring; do not probe or unplug HV connectors.
  • ⚠️ If you disconnect the 12V battery, you may lose some memory settings.
  • ⚠️ Clean spills immediately; coolant is toxic to pets and people.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (3/8" drive)
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 21mm lug nut socket
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (10–80 Nm range)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound, 50–250 in-lb range)
  • Gasket scraper
  • Plastic razor scraper
  • Shop rags
  • Flashlight
  • Wood block (2x6")

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Motorcraft Orange, prediluted or concentrate as specified) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamp(s) - Qty: 1-2
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully (coolant should feel cool to the touch).
  • Open the hood and remove the coolant reservoir cap only after it’s cool.
  • If you’ll be working near electrical connectors, disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket (the 12V battery is in the trunk area on many hybrids).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the right-front wheel

  • Loosen the wheel nuts with a 21mm lug nut socket before lifting.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and set it on jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel nuts with the 21mm lug nut socket and remove the wheel.

Step 2: Remove the right splash shield (inner fender liner)

  • Remove clips/screws using a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver.
  • Pull the liner back to access the belt/pulley area.

Step 3: Drain the engine coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the drain (or disconnect the lower hose if equipped) using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Let coolant fully drain, then close the drain.
  • Tip: Save time by draining completely once.

Step 4: Support the engine (if mount removal is needed for access)

  • Position a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the engine oil pan area with a wood block (2x6") between the jack and the pan.
  • Apply light upward support only (do not lift the car).
  • Wood spreads the load to prevent damage.

Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Rotate the belt tensioner using a serpentine belt tool (specialty) with a 15mm socket.
  • Slip the belt off a smooth pulley first, then remove it fully.
  • Take a photo of belt routing before removal.

Step 6: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Hold the pulley by hand and remove the bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • On installation: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Remove the water pump

  • Put rags under the pump area with shop rags (more coolant will spill).
  • Remove water pump bolts using a 10mm socket and 13mm socket (bolt sizes can vary by bracket).
  • Gently break the seal and pull the pump off the engine.

Step 8: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic razor scraper first to remove old gasket material.
  • Use a gasket scraper carefully only if needed (don’t gouge aluminum).
  • Wipe clean with shop rags and brake cleaner until dry and smooth.

Step 9: Install the new water pump and gasket

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the pump (dry unless your gasket instructions say otherwise).
  • Position the pump and hand-start all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench (inch-pound).
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb) for water pump bolts (common Ford spec for small M6 fasteners).
  • Tip: Even tightening prevents leaks.

Step 10: Reinstall pulley and serpentine belt

  • Install the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket, then Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Route the belt and release tension using the serpentine belt tool (specialty) with a 15mm socket.
  • Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every ribbed pulley groove.

Step 11: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the liner fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts using a 21mm lug nut socket.
  • Lower the car and tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Fill the reservoir slowly using a funnel with Motorcraft Orange coolant to the MAX line.
  • With the cap on, put the car in READY and set HVAC to high heat (this helps move coolant through heater circuits).
  • Let it run until the engine cycles and warm air blows, then shut down and let it cool.
  • Recheck level and top off using the funnel.
  • Tip: Air pockets can cause overheating.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the pump and hose connections with a flashlight.
  • Verify the cabin heater works and the temperature gauge stays normal on a 10–15 minute drive.
  • After the first full heat-soak/cool-down (next morning), recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • If you disconnected the 12V battery, confirm radio presets and auto-up/down windows (if reset is needed, cycle each window fully down then fully up).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $650-$1,150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $140-$320 (parts only)
