šŸ”§ Fusion - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing fails, the engine can overheat quickly, so replacement is important to prevent major engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

Assumption: This is the 2.5L belt-driven (external) water pump setup.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Never open the coolant reservoir when hot; let the engine cool fully.
  • āš ļø Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • āš ļø Keep coolant off painted surfaces; wipe spills immediately.
  • āš ļø Coolant is toxic to people and pets; drain into a clean pan and dispose properly.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required, but keep hands/clothes away from the belt path.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Fender cover
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • Socket set: 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Extensions: 3" and 6"
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Pliers (hose clamp type)
  • Gasket scraper (plastic)
  • Shop towels
  • Flashlight
  • Funnel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket/O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Motorcraft-spec, premixed 50/50) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamps (spring or worm gear, as needed) - Qty: 1-2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
  • Set the HVAC to full heat later during bleeding (this opens the heater core so air can escape).
  • Lay out a clean drain pan and have plenty of shop towels ready.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the car and remove the right-front wheel

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the right-front jacking point, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the right-front wheel using your socket set (lug size varies by wheel; use the correct socket from your set).

Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield / inner fender liner

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove any small bolts/screws holding the liner.
  • Pull the liner back to access the belt and water pump area.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
  • Drain coolant (method varies by radiator): use a flathead screwdriver for the drain petcock if equipped, or remove the lower splash access and drain from the lowest point into the pan.
  • Tip: Keep the drain pan centered—coolant spreads fast.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • A serpentine belt is the single long belt that drives accessories like the alternator and water pump.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley, then remove it from the rest of the pulleys.
  • If you’re reusing the belt (not recommended), take a photo of the belt routing with your flashlight for reference.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if it blocks pump bolts)

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the pulley bolts.
  • Pull the pulley off and set it aside.
  • Reinstall later with Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Disconnect coolant hose(s) at the water pump

  • Position the drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the pump area (more coolant will spill).
  • Use pliers (hose clamp type) to compress spring clamps and slide them back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break it free, then pull it off the pump.
  • Tip: Don’t pry hard—plastic fittings crack easily.

Step 7: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 10mm socket, extensions: 3" and 6", and a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Pull the pump straight off the engine. Expect coolant to spill—keep the drain pan underneath.
  • Remove the old gasket/O-ring from the engine side.

Step 8: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a gasket scraper (plastic) and shop towels to clean the engine’s sealing surface until it’s smooth and dry.
  • Do not gouge the metal surface; scratches can cause leaks.

Step 9: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match the original orientation).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 Nm range).
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect hoses and reinstall the pulley

  • Push hoses fully onto their fittings, then use pliers (hose clamp type) to move clamps back to their original positions.
  • Reinstall the pulley and tighten bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 11: Install the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt correctly around all pulleys (use your photo as a guide).
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slide the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.

Step 12: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the fender liner using the trim clip removal tool, 8mm socket, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall the wheel and snug lug nuts using the correct socket from your socket set.
  • Lower the car using the floor jack and remove jack stands.

Step 13: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to fill the coolant reservoir with engine coolant (Motorcraft-spec, premixed 50/50) to the MAX line.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to full hot (high fan).
  • Let it idle and watch the coolant level; add as it drops.
  • When the engine reaches operating temperature and you get steady heat from the vents, shut it off and let it cool.
  • Recheck level and top off to MAX once fully cooled.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and check for leaks around the water pump and hose connections with a flashlight.
  • Verify the belt runs smoothly (no squeal, no wobble).
  • After the first short drive, let the engine cool and recheck coolant level; top off if needed.
  • If the temperature gauge rises abnormally or heat is weak, stop and re-bleed (air may still be trapped).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $650-$1,050 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $120-$280 (parts only)

You Save: $530-$770 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 3-5 hours.
