🔧 Escape - Water Pump Replacement

On your Escape, the 2.5L water pump is mounted on the front/passenger side of the engine and circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it means draining the coolant, removing the accessory belt, unbolting the pump, cleaning the mounting surface, installing a new pump and gasket, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Only work on the cooling system when the engine is completely cool; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the belt drive area.
  • ⚠️ Support your Escape securely with jack stands if lifting it. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant away from pets and children. It is poisonous and often smells sweet.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the accessory belt removed except for a few seconds if absolutely necessary.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket or seal - Qty: 1
  • Motorcraft-compatible orange coolant concentrate or premix - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Distilled water - Qty: 1 gallon if using concentrate
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 if worn, cracked, glazed, or coolant-soaked

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before opening the coolant reservoir cap.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • A serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that drives accessories like the alternator and water pump.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so parts are not damaged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Cool the Engine and Disconnect the Battery

  • Make sure the engine is cold to the touch before starting.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Move the negative cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • Take photos before removing parts.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Escape at the proper front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and shake it lightly to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release any plastic push clips.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 4: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any remaining pressure.
  • Open the radiator drain if accessible, or loosen the lower radiator hose clamp carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Allow the coolant to drain fully into the pan.
  • Close the drain or reinstall the lower hose securely before continuing.

Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Before removing the belt, take a clear photo of the belt routing.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool 15mm or 15mm socket on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the water pump pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Inspect the belt. Replace it if it has cracks, shiny glazing, missing ribs, or coolant contamination.
  • Never let the tensioner snap back.

Step 6: Remove the Water Pump Pulley

  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the water pump pulley bolts, depending on bolt size fitted.
  • If the pulley spins, hold it steady by hand with gloves or apply light belt tension while loosening the bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 7: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place shop towels under the pump area to catch leftover coolant.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Note bolt locations if any bolts are different lengths.
  • Pull the water pump straight away from the engine.
  • If it sticks, gently tap or wiggle it by hand. Do not pry hard against aluminum surfaces.

Step 8: Clean the Mounting Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine mounting surface.
  • Wipe the surface clean with shop towels.
  • Do not gouge or scratch the aluminum surface.
  • Make sure no debris falls into the coolant passage.
  • Clean metal seals better.

Step 9: Install the New Water Pump

  • Position the new water pump gasket or seal on the new pump.
  • Install the pump against the engine by hand.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm range to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs), unless the replacement pump instructions specify otherwise.

Step 10: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley back onto the water pump hub.
  • Start the pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to snug the pulley bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 Nm range to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt using the photo you took earlier.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 15mm or 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield

  • Lift the splash shield into position.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall the fasteners.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall any plastic clips.
  • Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

Step 13: Refill the Cooling System

  • Lower your Escape carefully using the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Install a funnel spill-free coolant fill kit on the coolant reservoir.
  • Fill with the correct Motorcraft-compatible orange coolant. If using concentrate, mix 50/50 with distilled water.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.

Step 14: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and set the cabin heater to full hot with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the spill-free funnel.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.
  • Watch for bubbles. When bubbling slows and the heater blows warm air, the system is nearly bled.
  • Install the reservoir cap once the level stabilizes.

Step 15: Check for Leaks

  • Use a flashlight if available and inspect around the water pump, hose connections, and radiator drain.
  • Look for drips, wet trails, or coolant smell.
  • If a leak appears, shut the engine off and let it cool before tightening or correcting anything.

✅ After Repair

  • Take a short 10-15 minute test drive while watching the temperature gauge.
  • Let the engine cool completely, then recheck coolant level in the reservoir.
  • Top off coolant to the proper cold-fill mark if needed.
  • Reinspect the water pump area after the first drive and again the next day.
  • Dispose of old coolant at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used coolant.
