1500 - Water Pump Replacement 🚰

Replacing the water pump on your 3.6L V6 is very doable for a careful beginner, but it’s a bit involved because you must drain coolant and work around the serpentine belt and fan.

Quick check: Are you working at home with basic hand tools and no lift (just jack and stands)? And do you have any coolant already on hand? (If not, I’ll assume you need to buy everything.)

I’ll proceed with the full DIY assuming you’re on the ground with basic tools.

Safety & Prep ⚠️

  • 🧤 Safety first
    • Work on a cold engine only. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
    • Disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid accidental starts.
    • Use jack stands if you raise the front. Never rely on a jack alone.
    • Keep pets away: coolant is toxic and attractive to animals.

Parts You’ll Need 📦

  • 📦 New water pump (3.6L Pentastar, with gasket/O-ring included)
  • 📦 New thermostat housing gasket (optional but smart if you disturb it)
  • 📦 Fresh coolant:
    • Use HOAT / OAT coolant that meets Chrysler MS-12106 (often purple/orange). Pre-mixed 50/50 is easiest.
    • Plan on about 2–3 gallons of premix to refill and bleed.
  • 📦 RTV silicone (only if the pump manufacturer specifies it; OEM uses a gasket)

Tools Required 🛠️

  • 🛠️ Basic hand tools
    • Metric socket set (8–15 mm) with ratchet and extensions
    • Combination wrenches (10–15 mm)
    • Torque wrench (inch-lb and ft-lb if possible) – a tool that lets you tighten bolts to a specific spec.
    • Serpentine belt tool or long 3/8" or 1/2" breaker bar – used to rotate the belt tensioner.
    • Flat-blade screwdriver and trim clip tool (a forked tool to pop plastic clips) for covers.
    • Pliers for hose clamps (regular or hose clamp pliers).
  • 🛠️ Cooling system tools
    • Drain pan (large, at least 10–12 liters).
    • Funnel (long neck helps).
    • Shop towels / rags.
    • Plastic scraper – to clean gasket surfaces without gouging aluminum.

Key Torque Specs 🔧

  • 🧷 Water pump mounting bolts: ~105 in-lb (about 9 N·m)
  • 🧷 Thermostat housing bolts (if removed): ~105 in-lb
  • 🧷 Serpentine belt tensioner bolt (if loosened): ~40 ft-lb

These are typical OEM values for the 3.6L Pentastar; if your pump comes with a spec sheet, follow that.

Step 1 – Vehicle Setup & Coolant Drain 🧊

  • 🚗 Position the truck
    • Park your 1500 on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
    • If you want more room, raise the front slightly and support with jack stands under the frame.
  • 🧯 Disconnect battery
    • Use a 10 mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable and tuck it aside.
  • 💧 Drain coolant
    • Remove the radiator cap (only if the engine is completely cold).
    • Place the drain pan under the radiator drain petcock (bottom of radiator, usually passenger side).
    • Open the petcock with your fingers or pliers and let coolant drain.
    • Also loosen the lower radiator hose at the radiator if you want a faster drain (more mess, more complete).
    • When done, close the petcock and reattach the hose clamp.

Step 2 – Remove Intake Ducting & Fan Shroud 🌬️

  • 🧩 Remove air intake tube
    • Loosen the hose clamps at the airbox and throttle body.
    • Disconnect any small breather hoses or sensors on the tube (press tabs gently).
    • Lift the tube out and set aside.
  • 🌀 Remove fan shroud and fan (if needed)
    • Your 1500 may have a mechanical fan with clutch plus a shroud.
    • Unclip or unbolt the upper fan shroud (small bolts or plastic clips along the top).
    • If the fan is in the way:
      • Use a fan clutch wrench or large adjustable wrench on the fan clutch nut.
      • Hold the water pump pulley with a strap wrench or by carefully using a bolt head to keep it from turning.
      • Spin the fan clutch nut loose (usually reverse-thread on some, but on the 3.6L it’s standard right-hand; turn counterclockwise to loosen).
      • Lift the fan and shroud out together if possible.

Step 3 – Remove Serpentine Belt 🪢

  • 📸 Note belt routing
    • Take a clear photo of the belt path or find the routing diagram sticker under the hood.
  • 🔧 Release belt tension
    • Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley).
    • Insert your serpentine belt tool or breaker bar into the square hole or onto the bolt head.
    • Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension and slide the belt off one pulley.
    • Slowly release the tensioner back to rest.
    • Remove the belt from the pulleys and set aside (inspect for cracks; replace if worn).

Step 4 – Remove Old Water Pump 💦

  • 🧷 Disconnect hoses at the pump
    • Use pliers to squeeze the spring clamps and slide them back on the hose.
    • Twist the hose gently to break it free, then pull off. Expect some coolant to spill.
  • 🔩 Remove water pump bolts
    • Remove the bolts around the perimeter of the pump using the correct socket (usually 10 mm).
    • Note bolt lengths and positions; some may be longer. Lay them out in a pattern on the bench.
  • 🪛 Free the pump
    • Tap the pump housing gently with a rubber mallet to break the seal.
    • Pull the pump straight out. More coolant will drain; keep the pan under it.
  • 🧼 Clean the mounting surface
    • Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine block.
    • Do not gouge the aluminum; avoid metal scrapers if possible.
    • Wipe the surface with a clean rag and brake cleaner or alcohol until smooth and clean.

Step 5 – Install New Water Pump 🆕

  • 📐 Prepare the new pump
    • Make sure the new gasket or O-ring is correctly seated on the pump.
    • If the instructions call for a thin film of RTV, apply a very light bead only where specified and let it skin for a few minutes.
  • 📎 Position the pump
    • Align the pump with the bolt holes and press it gently into place.
    • Install all bolts finger-tight first to avoid cross-threading.
  • 🔧 Tighten bolts to spec
    • Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern to about 105 in-lb.
    • Do this in two passes: snug, then final torque.
  • 🧵 Reconnect hoses
    • Reinstall hoses onto the pump fittings and slide clamps back into place over the raised bead.

Step 6 – Reinstall Belt, Fan, and Intake 🔁

  • 🪢 Reinstall serpentine belt
    • Route the belt according to your photo/diagram, leaving one easy-access pulley for last.
    • Rotate the tensioner again, slip the belt over the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
    • Check that the belt is seated in all pulley grooves.
  • 🌀 Reinstall fan and shroud
    • Lower the fan and shroud into place.
    • Thread the fan clutch nut onto the water pump shaft and snug it (it will self-tighten when the engine runs).
    • Reinstall shroud bolts/clips along the top.
  • 🌬️ Reinstall intake tube
    • Reconnect the tube between airbox and throttle body.
    • Reconnect any sensors/hoses and tighten hose clamps.

Step 7 – Refill & Bleed Cooling System 🌡️

  • 🧴 Refill coolant
    • Make sure the drain petcock is closed and all hoses are tight.
    • Using a funnel, slowly fill the radiator (or reservoir, depending on your setup) with the correct 50/50 coolant mix.
    • Fill until it reaches the “FULL” mark in the reservoir.
  • 💨 Bleed air from system
    • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
    • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to HOT and fan on low.
    • Watch the temperature gauge and coolant level.
    • As the engine warms up and the thermostat opens, the level may drop; add coolant as needed.
    • Look for steady heat from the vents and no overheating.
  • 👀 Check for leaks
    • Inspect around the water pump, hoses, and drain plug for any drips.
    • Shut the engine off, let it cool completely, and recheck the coolant level; top off if needed.

Step 8 – Final Checks & Coolant Disposal ✅

  • 🧪 Coolant disposal
    • Pour old coolant into sealed containers and take it to a local recycling center or shop; do not dump it on the ground or in drains.
  • 🚙 Test drive
    • Take a short drive, watching the temperature gauge.
    • After the drive, check again for leaks and verify the coolant level when the engine cools.

Tips & Tricks 🧠

  • 🧰 Label bolts with a marker on cardboard in the pattern they came out to avoid confusion.
  • 🧊 If a hose is stuck, twist it gently instead of prying hard; cutting and replacing is better than cracking a plastic fitting.
  • 🧵 Don’t overtighten aluminum threads; always use the torque wrench where possible.
