🔧 CX-5 - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator to prevent overheating. If it’s leaking (often from the “weep hole”) or the bearing is noisy, replacing it prevents overheating and engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cold engine only; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and electrical connectors; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Dispose of coolant properly; it’s toxic to people and pets.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is recommended when working near the alternator.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extensions (3" and 6")
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb and ft-lb)
  • Plastic scraper
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket or O-ring (as supplied) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Mazda FL22 equivalent, premixed) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamp (assorted size) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (overnight is best).
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Take photos before removing hoses and covers.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower splash shield

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front, then support it on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lower engine cover/splash shield using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) using a flathead screwdriver if needed, and remove the coolant reservoir cap by hand to help it drain.
  • Let coolant drain fully, then close the drain.

Step 3: Remove access items at the front of the engine

  • Remove any intake ducting or small covers blocking access using a 10mm socket and flathead screwdriver.
  • Move wiring clips out of the way carefully with a trim clip removal tool.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine drive belt

  • Locate the belt tensioner.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension (this tool is a long, thin ratchet made for tight spaces).
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it fully.
  • Draw a belt routing diagram first.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Hold the pulley from turning by keeping light tension on the old belt (or carefully holding the pulley by hand).
  • Remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • On reassembly: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the water pump area; more coolant will spill.
  • Disconnect any hose attached to the pump using a flathead screwdriver (for the clamp) and twist the hose gently to break it free.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket with 3/8" drive extensions (3" and 6").
  • Pull the water pump straight off. If it’s stuck, tap gently with your palm—do not pry hard against aluminum surfaces.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop rags until dry and smooth.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (follow the gasket’s orientation).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten evenly using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb and ft-lb): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the hose and clamp using a flathead screwdriver.

Step 9: Reinstall the pulley and serpentine belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and start bolts by hand, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb and ft-lb): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Route the belt using your diagram.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
  • Double-check the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).

Step 11: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Fill the reservoir with engine coolant (Mazda FL22 equivalent, premixed) using a funnel.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT (this opens the heater core so air can bleed out).
  • Let it idle and watch the temperature gauge; top off as the level drops.
  • Shut the engine off, let it cool, then recheck and top off again.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the pump and hose connections with the engine running.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck coolant level after a full cool-down.
  • Confirm the heater blows hot air and the temperature gauge stays normal.
  • If you hear belt squeal, recheck belt alignment on every pulley.
