šŸ”§ Accord - Water Pump Replacement

On your Accord, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. If it’s leaking or the bearing is noisy, replacement prevents overheating and engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • āš ļø Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • āš ļø Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; clean spills immediately.
  • āš ļø Coolant is toxic—capture and dispose of it properly.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep the key away from the car while working near the radiator fans.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
  • 1/2 in drive breaker bar
  • 3/8 in drive ratchet
  • 3/8 in drive torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs)
  • Socket set (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 19mm)
  • Wrench set (10mm, 12mm, 14mm)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop rags
  • Funnel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump assembly - Qty: 1
  • Water pump O-ring / gasket - Qty: 1
  • Honda-compatible coolant (Type 2 premix) - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn/cracked)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
  • Raise the front of the car with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the radiator cap only after it’s cool to relieve any remaining pressure.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand (cool engine only).
  • Open the radiator drain (use a Phillips screwdriver if needed) and drain coolant into the pan.
  • Tip: Save coolant only if it’s clean and new.

Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield (access)

  • Remove the right-front wheel using a 19mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Remove the plastic clips/screws from the inner fender/splash shield using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
  • Pull the shield back to access the belt and water pump area.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) on the belt tensioner to relieve tension. (This tool is a long, thin handle designed to rotate the tensioner in tight spaces.)
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it from the rest.
  • If reusing the belt, note the belt routing or take a photo.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley from turning by keeping tension on it with your hand, then remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8 in ratchet.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.
  • On reassembly, tighten pulley bolts to Torque to 12 NĀ·m (9 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Place shop rags under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8 in ratchet.
  • Carefully pull the water pump straight off. More coolant will spill—keep the drain pan underneath.

Step 6: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine mating surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop rags. Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new O-ring / gasket onto the new pump (make sure it sits flat and is not twisted).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand.
  • Tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket and torque wrench to Torque to 12 NĀ·m (9 ft-lbs).
  • Tip: Hand-start every bolt to prevent cross-threading.

Step 8: Reinstall pulley and belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and start the bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten pulley bolts using a torque wrench to Torque to 12 NĀ·m (9 ft-lbs).
  • Route the belt back on using your photo/diagram.
  • Rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool (specialty) and slip the belt fully onto the last pulley.
  • Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver.
  • Install the wheel using a 19mm socket.
  • Lower the car, then torque the lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench to Torque to 108 NĀ·m (80 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Refill with Honda-compatible coolant (Type 2 premix) using a funnel.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to MAX HOT (fan medium) to help purge air.
  • Let the engine reach operating temp; top off coolant as the level drops.
  • Shut off, let cool, then recheck and top off the radiator and overflow bottle.

āœ… After Repair

  • With the engine running, check for coolant leaks around the water pump and hose connections.
  • Verify the temperature gauge stays normal during a 10–15 minute test drive.
  • After the car cools completely, recheck the coolant level and top off if needed.
  • If you hear belt squeal, re-check belt seating on all pulleys.
