š§ Encore - Water Pump Replacement
The water pump circulates coolant through your Encoreās engine and turbo cooling system. If itās leaking, noisy, or the engine is overheating, replacing the pump restores proper cooling and helps prevent engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.5 hours
Assumption: Procedure/torques listed for the 1.4L turbo water pump driven by the serpentine belt (common on this engine).
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Never open the coolant reservoir when hot; wait until fully cool.
- ā ļø Coolant is toxic; catch it in a drain pan and keep away from kids/pets.
- ā ļø Support the Encore with jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a jack.
- ā ļø Keep fingers clear of the belt path; the tensioner is spring-loaded.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the positive terminal.

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket/O-ring (if not included with pump) - Qty: 1
- Coolant (Dex-Cool 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Serpentine belt (recommended while youāre here) - Qty: 1
- Coolant hose clamp(s) (only if yours are damaged) - Qty: 1-2
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
- Raise the front-right corner with a floor jack and support with jack stands.
- Remove the lower splash shield if equipped; use a Torx T20 screwdriver and trim clip removal tool.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap to release any remaining pressure.
- Drain coolant from the radiator drain (if accessible) or by removing the lower radiator hose using hose clamp pliers (specialty).
- Tip: Use rags to guide the stream.
Step 2: Remove the intake ducting (for access)
- Loosen the intake clamps using a 10mm socket.
- Lift the intake duct/air inlet tube out of the way.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight).
- Rotate the tensioner with a serpentine belt tool, 3/8" drive (specialty) to release belt tension.
- Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it fully.
- Tip: Take a photo of belt routing first.
Step 4: Remove components blocking the water pump (as needed)
- From the passenger-side wheel well/splash shield opening, inspect what blocks the pump.
- Remove any brackets or covers in the way using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket.
- If a hose is attached to the pump area, release the clamp with hose clamp pliers (specialty) and pull the hose off carefully.
Step 5: Unbolt and remove the water pump
- Place shop rags under the pump; more coolant will spill.
- Remove the water pump bolts using a 10mm socket (common fastener size for this pump).
- Gently wiggle the pump free and remove it.
Step 6: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material without gouging the aluminum.
- Wipe the surface clean with shop rags until dry and smooth.
- Tip: No scratchesāleaks start there.
Step 7: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket/O-ring on the new pump (follow the pumpās included instructions).
- Position the pump and start all bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 8: Reinstall hoses, brackets, and the belt
- Reconnect any coolant hoses and secure clamps using hose clamp pliers (specialty).
- Reinstall any brackets/covers using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket.
- Route the serpentine belt correctly, then rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool, 3/8" drive (specialty) and slip the belt into place.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and intake duct
- Reinstall the splash shield using a Torx T20 screwdriver and trim clip removal tool.
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps using a 10mm socket.
Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Lower the Encore from the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Fill the coolant reservoir with Dex-Cool 50/50 premix using a funnel to the proper level line.
- Start the engine and set the heater to HOT with the fan on low.
- Let it idle until operating temperature; watch the coolant level and add as it drops.
- When the radiator fan cycles on/off at least once, shut the engine off and let it cool completely, then top off to the cold mark.
ā After Repair
- Check for leaks around the water pump and hose connections with the engine running.
- Verify the temperature gauge stays normal and the heater blows hot air.
- Recheck coolant level the next morning (cold engine) and top off if needed.
- If the belt chirps or looks off-track, shut down and re-seat it.
