🔧 Escape - Water Pump Replacement

Your Escape’s water pump moves coolant through the 1.6L turbo engine so it does not overheat. This repair involves draining the coolant, removing the accessory belt, replacing the pump and seal, then refilling and bleeding air from the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work only on a fully cold engine. Hot coolant can spray out and cause serious burns.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working around the belt and pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands if lifting your Escape. A floor jack is only for lifting, not supporting.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is poisonous. Keep it away from children, pets, and open drains.
  • ⚠️ If the engine temperature rises above normal during bleeding, shut the engine off immediately.

🔧 Required Tools

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket or O-ring seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant, Ford orange-compatible premix - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Coolant hose clamps if damaged - Qty: As needed

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool completely before opening the coolant reservoir.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🧰 A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin wrench that moves the spring-loaded belt tensioner.
  • 🧰 Hose clamp pliers are pliers made to squeeze factory spring clamps without slipping.
  • 🧪 Use coolant compatible with Ford orange coolant. Do not mix unknown coolant types.
  • 📸 Take a clear photo of the belt routing before removing the belt.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the front of your Escape.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front support points.
  • Lower your Escape gently onto the jack stands.
  • Never work under only a jack.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use a 7mm socket, 8mm socket, or plastic trim clip remover to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to loosen the right-front wheel well liner if it blocks belt-side access.

Step 3: Drain the Cooling System

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Place a 2-gallon minimum drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to open the radiator drain petcock if accessible.
  • If the drain petcock is hard to reach, use hose clamp pliers to loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and carefully pull the hose back enough to drain coolant.
  • Let the coolant drain fully.

Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to remove belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off one smooth pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the rest of the pulleys.
  • Your belt photo is your map.

Step 5: Move Parts Blocking the Water Pump

  • The water pump is on the belt side of the engine.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove any small shields or brackets blocking pump access.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move coolant hose clamps away from the pump fittings if hoses are attached.
  • Twist hoses gently by hand before pulling. This breaks the hose loose without damaging fittings.

Step 6: Remove the Water Pump Pulley if Needed

  • If the pulley blocks the pump bolts, use a 10mm socket to loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley spins, press the belt lightly against it by hand or hold the pulley carefully while loosening.
  • Remove the pulley and place it aside face-up.

Step 7: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place the drain pan under the water pump because more coolant will spill.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Lay the bolts on the ground in the same pattern they came out.
  • Pull the pump straight away from the engine by hand.
  • If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver very gently at a safe edge. Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Clean the Sealing Surface

  • Use a clean shop towel by hand to wipe the pump mounting area.
  • Remove old gasket material carefully with a plastic edge if needed.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum engine surface.
  • Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and flat before installing the new pump.
  • A clean surface prevents leaks.

Step 9: Install the New Water Pump

  • Install the new gasket or O-ring seal on the new water pump.
  • Hold the pump squarely against the engine.
  • Start all water pump bolts by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting a bolt crooked.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use an inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley back onto the pump.
  • Start the pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use an inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect Hoses and Brackets

  • Use hose clamp pliers to reinstall coolant hose clamps in their original positions.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall any brackets or shields removed for access.
  • Make sure hoses are fully seated past their raised bead before releasing clamps.

Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the last pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check every pulley to confirm the belt ribs are centered in the grooves.

Step 13: Refill the Cooling System

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to close the radiator drain petcock if opened.
  • If the lower radiator hose was removed, use hose clamp pliers to reinstall the clamp.
  • Install the spill-free coolant funnel on the coolant reservoir.
  • Pour Ford orange-compatible premixed coolant slowly until the reservoir reaches the MAX line.

Step 14: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Set the cabin heat to full hot and the fan to low.
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the spill-free funnel installed.
  • Add coolant as the level drops and air bubbles come out.
  • Let the engine warm until the upper radiator hose gets hot and the heater blows warm air.
  • Watch the temperature gauge the whole time.
  • If the gauge climbs above normal, shut the engine off and let it cool before continuing.

Step 15: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle

  • Use a 7mm socket, 8mm socket, and plastic trim clip remover to reinstall the splash shield and wheel well liner fasteners.
  • Use the floor jack to lift your Escape slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Escape slowly to the ground.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check for leaks around the water pump, hoses, and radiator drain.
  • ✅ Let the engine cool completely, then recheck the coolant level and top off to the MAX line.
  • ✅ Test drive for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ✅ Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
  • ✅ Recheck coolant again the next morning when the engine is cold.
  • ✅ Recycle old coolant properly. Do not pour it onto the ground or into a drain.
