🔧 Focus - Water Pump Replacement
The water pump circulates coolant through your Focus’s engine and radiator. If the pump is leaking, noisy, or the engine is overheating, replacing it restores proper cooling and prevents engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; let it cool fully.
- ⚠️ Support the car on jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause slipping.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; coolant is toxic and irritating.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but remove the key and keep hands clear of the radiator fan (it can turn on).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
- Funnel
- Trim clip remover tool
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 13mm socket
- 15mm socket

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket / O-ring seal - Qty: 1
- Engine coolant (Ford-approved, correct type for your Focus) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (upper radiator hose should feel cool).
- Set the cabin heat to HOT (this helps purge air during refill).
- Place a drain pan under the front of the engine area before opening any hoses or drains.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Depressurize and drain the coolant
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- Position your drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Open the drain (or remove the lower splash access, depending on your Focus) using a flat-blade screwdriver and let coolant drain.
- Tip: Save pets from coolant; it’s sweet and toxic.
Step 2: Raise the front-right and remove the splash shield
- Lift the front-right using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the lower/right splash shield fasteners using an 8mm socket and a trim clip remover tool.
Step 3: Remove the accessory drive belt
- Place a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner using a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to relieve tension, then slip the belt off a smooth pulley.
- Remove the belt from the engine bay and note the routing (take a photo).
- Tip: If the belt is cracked, replace it.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley
- Hold the pulley from turning by keeping light tension on the belt path (or holding the pulley by hand if accessible).
- Remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
- On installation: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Place shop rags under the pump area (more coolant will spill).
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive extension set.
- Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the mating surface until it’s smooth and dry.
- Tip: Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
Step 6: Install the new water pump and seal
- Install the new gasket/O-ring on the new pump (match the original orientation) by hand.
- Position the pump onto the engine and start all bolts by hand.
- Tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs), then Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the pulley and belt
- Reinstall the water pump pulley and hand-start the bolts.
- Tighten with a 10mm socket, then Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range).
- Route the new belt exactly like your photo.
- Rotate the tensioner with a 15mm socket and serpentine belt tool (specialty), then slip the belt fully onto the last pulley.
- Visually check the belt is seated in every ribbed pulley groove.
Step 8: Reinstall splash shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the splash shield using a trim clip remover tool (for clips) and an 8mm socket (for screws/bolts).
- Lower the vehicle carefully using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
Step 9: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Refill the coolant reservoir using a funnel with engine coolant (Ford-approved, correct type for your Focus) to the MAX line.
- Start the engine and let it idle; keep the reservoir cap off at first.
- As the engine warms up, top off coolant as the level drops.
- When warm air blows from the vents and the level stabilizes, install the cap hand-tight.
- Shut the engine off and let it cool completely, then recheck and top off to MAX.
- Tip: If it overheats, shut it off immediately.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Focus and check for leaks around the pump and under the car.
- Verify the temperature gauge stays normal during a 10-15 minute test drive.
- After the next full cool-down, recheck coolant level and add if needed.
- Dispose of old coolant properly (do not pour it on the ground).
