🔧 Camry - Water Pump Replacement
On your Camry, the engine water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it typically involves draining coolant, removing the drive belt, unbolting the pump, and then refilling/bleeding the cooling system.
Assumption: This is for the engine water pump (not the inverter/electric coolant pump).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on a cold engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- 🧯 Keep coolant off the ground; it’s toxic to pets and people.
- 🔌 Hybrid safety: avoid touching orange high-voltage cables and do not probe hybrid connectors.
- 🔋 Recommended: disconnect the 12V negative terminal to prevent fans/pumps cycling unexpectedly.
- 🧱 Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.

- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 Recommended if belt is worn
- Replacement plastic under-cover clips - Qty: 4 Optional, commonly break
📋 Before You Begin
- 🧭 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool fully (radiator hoses should feel cool).
- 🔋 Disconnect the 12V negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- 🪣 Set a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- 🧰 A spill-free coolant funnel is a funnel that seals at the radiator/overflow neck to reduce air pockets and spills.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower splash shield
- Use a floor jack to lift the front jacking point and place jack stands at the approved support points.
- Remove the engine under cover using a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
Step 2: Drain the engine coolant
- Remove any splash access panels with a 10mm socket as needed.
- Slowly loosen the radiator cap (only if fully cool) by hand.
- Open the radiator drain cock using a flathead screwdriver (if equipped) and let coolant drain into the drain pan.
- Tip: Save coolant only if perfectly clean.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine drive belt
- Note or photograph the belt routing with your phone.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt off a pulley.
- Remove the belt from the water pump pulley area.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)
- Hold the pulley by hand and loosen the small pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Place shop towels under the pump area to catch leftover coolant.
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and/or 12mm socket (bolt sizes vary by pump design).
- Pull the water pump straight off the engine.
Step 6: Clean the mating surface
- Use a plastic razor blade scraper first, then a gasket scraper carefully to remove old gasket material.
- Wipe the surface clean with shop towels.
- Tip: Do not gouge the aluminum.
Step 7: Install the new water pump and gasket
- Install the new gasket/O-ring on the new pump (dry, unless the part instructions say otherwise).
- Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench.
- Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs) for the water pump mounting bolts. Verify if your replacement pump uses different fasteners.
Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and belt
- Reinstall the pulley and hand-start bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten pulley bolts evenly with a torque wrench.
- Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs) for water pump pulley bolts.
- Route the belt correctly and use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to release the tensioner back onto the belt.
Step 9: Reinstall the under cover
- Reinstall the splash shield using a 10mm socket and replace broken clips as needed with the trim clip removal tool.
- Lower the vehicle using the floor jack safely.
Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Install the spill-free coolant funnel kit at the radiator fill point (or reservoir fill point if your configuration uses that).
- Add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) slowly until it stays full.
- Reconnect the 12V negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Start the car to READY mode and set the heater to MAX HEAT (this helps move coolant through the heater core).
- Let it run and watch the funnel level; add coolant as the level drops.
- When bubbles stop and heat is steady, shut the car off and let it cool, then top off to the correct level.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Check for leaks around the water pump with a flashlight while it’s running and after it cools.
- 🌡️ Confirm the heater blows hot air and the temperature stays normal on a test drive.
- 🧴 Recheck coolant level the next morning (cold) and top off if needed.
- 🧼 Clean any spilled coolant and dispose of old coolant properly.
