🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

Your Camry uses a belt-driven water pump on the front of the engine. Replacing it means draining the coolant, removing the drive belt, swapping the pump and gasket, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system so the engine does not overheat.

  • Do not start the engine with the coolant system empty.
  • Use eye protection when draining coolant and when removing the serpentine belt.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle only if you need more access from below.
  • Have a clean drain pan ready before opening the cooling system.
  • Label bolts as you remove them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the radiator drain cock carefully and drain the coolant.
  • If equipped, remove the radiator cap only when the engine is cold.
  • Close the drain cock after the coolant is fully drained.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and access components

  • Remove the engine cover by lifting it straight up.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any intake duct or splash shield fasteners that block access.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or a breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the water pump pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • Take a quick belt-routing photo first.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the pulley bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Break the pump free gently and remove it from the engine.
  • Expect a small amount of coolant spill.

Step 6: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use a gasket scraper to clean the old gasket material off the engine surface.
  • Wipe the area clean with shop rags.
  • Do not scratch or gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket or O-ring on the new pump.
  • Position the new water pump on the engine.
  • Start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Install the pulley and start the bolts by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket to tighten the pulley bolts.
  • Torque to 21 N·m (15 ft-lbs).
  • Route the serpentine belt back on all pulleys using your belt-routing photo.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to release the tensioner and slip the belt into place.

Step 9: Refill the cooling system

  • Mix and fill with the correct Toyota coolant if needed, or use premixed coolant.
  • Pour coolant slowly through a funnel into the radiator or reservoir, depending on access.
  • Fill the overflow reservoir to the proper mark.

Step 10: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to hot.
  • Watch the coolant level and top off as air escapes.
  • Let the upper radiator hose warm up as the thermostat opens.
  • Install the radiator cap when coolant level stabilizes.
  • Watch for steady heat from the cabin vents.

Step 11: Recheck for leaks

  • Inspect the water pump, pulley area, and drain cock for leaks.
  • Recheck coolant level after the first warm-up cycle.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive the vehicle and monitor engine temperature.
  • Check the coolant level again after the engine fully cools.
  • Reinspect for seepage around the pump the next day.
  • If the heater blows cold or the temp rises, there may still be air in the system.
