šŸ”§ Flex - Water Pump Replacement

On your Flex, the water pump is driven by the timing chain inside the front of the engine. Replacing it means removing the front timing cover and timing components, then resealing everything carefully to prevent coolant or oil leaks.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 8-12 hours

Assumption: 3.5L non-turbo (internal timing-chain water pump).

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let the engine cool fully before opening the cooling system.
  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental starts.
  • āš ļø Support the engine from above before removing any engine mount.
  • āš ļø Keep coolant off belts and electrical connectors; wipe spills immediately.
  • āš ļø Timing components must stay in time; do not rotate the crank/cams independently once the chain is off.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump O-ring / seal - Qty: 1
  • Front timing cover gasket set - Qty: 1
  • Front crankshaft seal - Qty: 1
  • RTV silicone sealant (engine oil/coolant safe) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Motorcraft-spec equivalent) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Engine oil - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Crankshaft pulley bolt (single-use) - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Timing chain kit (recommended while open) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover (pull upward).
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Set up the engine support bar (specialty) across the fender rails and attach it to the engine lift point; this holds the engine when the mount comes off.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator area to catch coolant.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Remove the coolant reservoir cap (only when cool).
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the lower splash shield fasteners as needed for access.
  • Open the radiator drain (or remove the lower radiator hose) and drain into a drain pan.

Step 2: Raise the front and remove the right front wheel

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the wheel using a 19mm socket.
  • Remove the right front inner fender liner/splash shield using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt and front-side accessories

  • Relieve belt tension using a serpentine belt tool 3/8" drive and remove the belt.
  • Remove any accessory brackets/lines blocking the front cover area using a metric socket set 8mm-21mm (move aside without kinking hoses).
  • Take photos before moving brackets.

Step 4: Support the engine and remove the right engine mount

  • Take the engine’s weight with the engine support bar (specialty) (tighten until the mount is slightly unloaded).
  • Remove the right engine mount and mount bracket bolts using a metric socket set 13mm-18mm.

Step 5: Remove the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer)

  • Remove the crank bolt using a 1/2" drive breaker bar and appropriate socket.
  • Use a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty) to pull the pulley off straight.
  • Discard the old crank bolt if your replacement is single-use (recommended).

Step 6: Remove the front timing cover

  • Remove the front cover bolts using a metric socket set 8mm-13mm.
  • Carefully break the seal and remove the cover using a plastic razor scraper and pry bar very gently at reinforced pry points.
  • Clean gasket/RTV surfaces with a plastic razor scraper, brake cleaner spray, and shop rags.

Step 7: Set engine to timing position and lock it

  • Rotate the engine by hand using a socket and ratchet on the crankshaft until timing marks align.
  • Install the Ford 3.5L timing tool kit (specialty) components to lock the crank/cams (these tools hold parts in the correct position).
  • Use a paint marker to add extra reference marks on the chain and sprockets.

Step 8: Remove timing chain tension and chain(s) as required

  • Relieve/remove the chain tensioner(s) using a metric socket set.
  • Remove the chain(s) and guides as needed to access the water pump using a metric socket set.
  • Keep parts organized in order on a clean bench.

Step 9: Remove the water pump

  • Place a drain pan under the pump area (more coolant will spill).
  • Remove the water pump bolts using a metric socket set.
  • Remove the pump; if stuck, tap gently and evenly—do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 10: Install the new water pump

  • Clean the mating surface with a plastic razor scraper and wipe with brake cleaner spray.
  • Install the new pump with the new seal/O-ring.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench and Torque to factory specification (do not guess).

Step 11: Reinstall timing components and verify timing

  • Reinstall guides and chain(s) using a metric socket set.
  • Reinstall/prime the tensioner(s) using a metric socket set.
  • Remove timing tools, then rotate the engine by hand two full turns using a ratchet on the crank and re-check timing alignment.
  • If it binds, stop—timing may be off.

Step 12: Reseal and install the front timing cover

  • Install new timing cover gasket(s) and apply RTV silicone sealant only at the factory seam/joint areas (commonly where covers meet the oil pan/head corners).
  • Install the cover and hand-start all bolts.
  • Tighten in sequence using a torque wrench and Torque to factory specification (do not guess).
  • Install a new front crankshaft seal if removed/damaged (press in squarely).

Step 13: Install crank pulley and new crank bolt

  • Install the pulley fully seated.
  • Install the new crank bolt and tighten using a torque wrench plus torque angle gauge (specialty) using the factory torque-plus-angle method.
  • Torque to factory specification (do not guess).

Step 14: Reinstall engine mount, belt, splash shields, and wheel

  • Reinstall the right engine mount and bracket using a metric socket set and torque wrench, then slowly unload the engine support bar (specialty).
  • Reinstall accessory brackets/lines using a metric socket set.
  • Install the serpentine belt using a serpentine belt tool 3/8" drive.
  • Reinstall the fender liner/splash shields using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Install the wheel using a 19mm socket and Torque to factory specification (do not guess).

Step 15: Refill coolant and change the oil

  • Refill with the correct engine coolant.
  • Change the engine oil and filter using a drain pan, socket set, and oil filter wrench if needed.
  • Coolant contamination can ruin engine bearings.

āœ… After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and let it idle while watching for leaks at the timing cover and water pump area.
  • Bring the engine to operating temperature, then re-check coolant level and top off as needed.
  • Verify heater output is hot (helps confirm coolant circulation).
  • After a short test drive, re-check for leaks and re-check coolant and oil levels.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
