F-150 - Water Pump Replacement 🔧

This guide is for your 2015 F-150 5.0L with the stock, belt-driven mechanical water pump.

Safety & Prep ⚠️

  • 🧯 Work on a cold engine only. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • 🔌 Disconnect the negative battery cable (10 mm) to avoid accidental starts.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and eye protection. Coolant is slippery and harmful if swallowed.

Parts You’ll Need 📦

  • 🧊 Water pump assembly (5.0L Coyote, with new gasket/O-ring)
  • 🧵 Water pump mounting bolts (Ford recommends new bolts)
  • 🟢 Motorcraft Orange coolant (pre-mix or concentrate + distilled water)
  • 🔁 Optional: new serpentine belt if yours is worn or cracked
  • 🪫 Small amount of RTV silicone if specified with your pump gasket (many come with molded gasket and need no sealant)

Tools You’ll Need 🛠

  • 🧰 Socket set (metric): 8 mm, 10 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm
  • 🧰 Ratchets: 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive
  • 🧰 Torque wrench (10–80 ft-lb range)
  • 🧰 Serpentine belt tool or long-handled 1/2" breaker bar
    • This is a long bar that gives leverage to release belt tension.
  • 🧰 Drain pan (at least 3–4 gallons capacity)
  • 🧰 Flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool (for hose clamps and clips)
  • 🧰 Pliers (for spring hose clamps)
  • 🧰 Plastic scraper (to clean gasket surface without scratching aluminum)
  • 🧰 Shop towels and brake cleaner (for cleaning surfaces)
  • 🧰 Funnel and a clean jug for mixing coolant

Key Torque Specs 📏

  • 🧷 Water pump bolts: 18 N·m (13 ft-lb)
  • 🧷 Thermostat housing bolts (if removed): 10 N·m (89 in-lb)
  • 🧷 Belt tensioner bolts (if loosened): 48 N·m (35 ft-lb)
  • 🧷 Fan shroud / small brackets: 8–10 N·m (71–89 in-lb)

Step 1 – Drain the Coolant 🚿

  • 🧊 Place the drain pan under the radiator drain (bottom of radiator, passenger side).
  • 🧊 Remove the coolant reservoir cap to let air in.
  • 🧊 Open the radiator drain petcock (small valve) by hand or with pliers and let coolant drain fully.
  • 🧊 Close the petcock once drained. Do not overtighten; it’s plastic.

Step 2 – Remove Intake Ducting (If Needed) 🌬️

  • 🛠 Loosen the hose clamps on the air intake tube at the throttle body and airbox (usually 8 mm or flat screwdriver).
  • 🛠 Unplug any sensors on the tube (MAF, etc.). Press the tab and pull gently.
  • 🛠 Lift the tube out and set aside. This gives more room at the front of the engine.

Step 3 – Remove the Serpentine Belt 🌀

  • 🛠 Note or take a picture of the belt routing sticker under the hood.
  • 🛠 Insert your belt tool or 1/2" breaker bar into the tensioner square hole.
  • 🛠 Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension (usually clockwise) and slide the belt off the water pump pulley.
  • 🛠 Let the tensioner return slowly. Remove the belt completely if it’s in your way.

Step 4 – Remove Fan Shroud / Obstructions 🧱

  • 🛠 On many 5.0L trucks, you can access the pump with the fan shroud in place, but it’s easier with more room.
  • 🛠 Remove the upper fan shroud bolts (usually 10 mm) and any clips holding wiring.
  • 🛠 Lift the shroud up and out if needed. Be careful around the fan blades.

Step 5 – Disconnect Hoses from the Water Pump 🚰

  • 🛠 Use pliers to squeeze the spring clamps on the upper and lower hoses attached to the pump and slide the clamps back on the hose.
  • 🛠 Twist the hose gently to break it free, then pull it off. Use a flat screwdriver carefully if stuck, but don’t gouge the hose barb.
  • 🛠 Expect more coolant to drain—keep the pan under the pump area.

Step 6 – Remove the Water Pump 🔩

  • 🛠 Remove the water pump pulley bolts if needed (usually 10 mm). Sometimes you can leave the pulley on and remove the pump with it.
  • 🛠 Remove all water pump mounting bolts (13 mm typically).
    • Note their lengths and positions; some may be different.
  • 🛠 Gently tap the pump with a rubber mallet to break it loose if it’s stuck.
  • 🛠 Pull the pump straight off the engine. More coolant may spill.

Step 7 – Clean the Gasket Surface 🧽

  • 🧼 Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine block surface.
  • 🧼 Do not use a metal scraper; it can gouge the aluminum and cause leaks.
  • 🧼 Wipe with a clean rag and a little brake cleaner until the surface is clean and smooth.
  • 🧼 Make sure no debris falls into the coolant passages.

Step 8 – Prepare and Install the New Pump 🆕

  • 🛠 Install the new gasket on the pump.
    • If it’s a molded rubber gasket, install it dry.
    • If the instructions call for RTV, apply a very thin bead only where specified.
  • 🛠 Position the pump on the engine, lining up the bolt holes.
  • 🛠 Install all mounting bolts finger-tight first to avoid cross-threading.
  • 🛠 Torque the bolts in a crisscross pattern to 18 N·m (13 ft-lb).
  • 🛠 Reinstall the pulley if removed and tighten its bolts snug (about 18–20 ft-lb).

Step 9 – Reconnect Hoses and Reassemble 🧩

  • 🛠 Reinstall all coolant hoses onto the pump fittings.
  • 🛠 Slide the spring clamps back into place over the hose ends.
  • 🛠 Reinstall the fan shroud and any brackets or wiring clips you removed. Tighten bolts to about 8–10 N·m (just snug).
  • 🛠 Reinstall the serpentine belt following the routing diagram. Use the tensioner tool to slip the belt over the last pulley.
  • 🛠 Reinstall the intake tube and plug in any sensors.

Step 10 – Refill and Bleed the Cooling System 🧊

  • 🧪 Mix coolant if needed: 50/50 Motorcraft Orange and distilled water (unless you bought pre-mix).
  • 🧪 Slowly fill the coolant reservoir to the “MAX” line.
  • 🧪 Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🧪 Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to full hot and fan on low.
  • 🧪 Watch the temperature gauge and the coolant level. Add coolant as the level drops.
  • 🧪 Let the engine reach operating temperature. Squeeze the upper radiator hose (carefully, it will be warm) to help burp air.
  • 🧪 Once the level stabilizes and there are no bubbles, shut off the engine and let it cool completely.
  • 🧪 Recheck the level when cold and top off to the “MAX” line if needed.

Step 11 – Final Checks ✅

  • 🔍 Inspect around the water pump, hoses, and thermostat area for any leaks.
  • 🔍 Check belt alignment and listen for any squeaks or grinding.
  • 🔍 Take a short test drive, then recheck for leaks and coolant level once it cools again.

Tips for a First-Time DIYer 💡

  • 🧠 Take pictures as you go so you remember hose and wiring locations.
  • 🧠 Lay bolts out on cardboard in the pattern you removed them.
  • 🧠 Never reuse old, crushed paper gaskets; they almost always leak.
  • 🧠 Dispose of old coolant properly; pets are attracted to its sweet smell and it’s toxic.
