🔧 Journey - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing fails, you can lose coolant and overheat, which can quickly damage your engine. On your Journey’s 3.6L, the pump is belt-driven at the front of the engine.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the serpentine belt path; the tensioner snaps back hard.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic; catch all coolant in a drain pan and dispose of it properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended any time you’re working near the alternator wiring.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3", 6")
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Torx T25 bit
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop towels
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (foot-pound)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump (3.6L) - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket/O-ring (included with pump on most kits) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (OAT, 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine belt (recommended while you’re here) - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamps (optional if originals are weak) - Qty: 1-2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • Plan your coolant handling: set a drain pan under the radiator drain area before you open anything.
  • Take a quick photo of belt routing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the right-front wheel

  • Loosen the lug nuts slightly using a 21mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and set it securely on jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel using a 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield

  • Remove the fender liner/splash shield fasteners using a Torx T25 bit, 8mm socket, and trim clip tool.
  • Pull the liner back to access the front of the engine and belt area.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap (only if the engine is cool) to release any residual pressure.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) and let coolant drain fully. Use hose clamp pliers if you need to move any hoses for access.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Install a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt using a serpentine belt tool (specialty) (a long handle helps in tight spaces).
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off one smooth pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly and remove the belt from the rest of the pulleys.
  • If the belt is cracked, replace it.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • If the pulley wants to spin, reinstall the belt loosely for a moment to hold it, then remove the bolts, then remove the belt again using the 15mm socket and serpentine belt tool (specialty).

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place shop towels under the pump area to catch remaining coolant.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Pull the pump straight out. More coolant will spill—keep the drain pan ready.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop towels. The surface must be clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface.

Step 8: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (as supplied).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using an inch-pound torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and start the bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten pulley bolts evenly using a foot-pound torque wrench: Torque to 24 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Route the serpentine belt according to the under-hood routing diagram.
  • Rotate the tensioner using a 15mm socket and serpentine belt tool (specialty), slip the belt on, and release the tensioner slowly.
  • Double-check the belt is seated in every pulley groove using a flashlight.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a Torx T25 bit, 8mm socket, and trim clip tool.
  • Reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts using a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir slowly using a funnel with OAT 50/50 premix coolant.
  • Start the engine and set the HVAC to full heat (this helps move coolant through the heater core).
  • Let it idle and watch the temperature gauge. As the thermostat opens, the coolant level may drop—top off as needed.
  • Inspect for leaks around the pump using a flashlight.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck coolant level after the first full heat-soak and cool-down cycle; top off if needed.
  • Verify the heater blows hot air and the temperature gauge stays normal on a 10-15 minute drive.
  • Check for coolant drips the next morning under the passenger-front area.
  • If you spilled coolant on the belt/pulleys, clean with shop towels and recheck for squeal.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
