🔧 Town & Country - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing fails, you can lose coolant, overheat, and risk engine damage. On your Town & Country’s 3.6L, the pump sits on the front of the engine and is driven by the serpentine belt.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

Assumption: Stock (factory) 3.6L cooling system layout.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the cooling system hot; let it fully cool.
  • ⚠️ Support the van with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before alternator work.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/clothes clear of belt and pulleys.

🔧 Required Tools

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (upper radiator hose should feel cool).
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Raise the front passenger side with a floor jack and place it on jack stands.
  • Remove the passenger front wheel using a 21mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) carefully using a flathead screwdriver (if equipped with a slotted style) and let coolant drain.
  • Remove the coolant reservoir cap to help it drain faster (only when cool).

Step 2: Remove the passenger splash shield (inner fender)

  • Remove push pins/screws using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Pull the splash shield out to expose the belt/pulley area.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Take a clear photo of the belt routing with your phone.
  • Rotate the belt tensioner using a serpentine belt tool or 15mm long-handled wrench to release tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley and remove it. (The tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.)

Step 4: Create access (alternator removal)

  • Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the tab (use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed).
  • Remove the alternator power cable nut using a 13mm socket and set the cable aside.
  • Remove alternator mounting bolts using a 13mm socket with a ratchet and extensions, then lift the alternator out.
  • Reinstall torque: Torque alternator mounting bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan under the water pump area—more coolant will spill.
  • Remove the water pump bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Gently break the seal and pull the pump away from the engine. Use a flathead screwdriver carefully only on sturdy prying points.
  • Remove the old gasket/seal.

Step 6: Clean the sealing surface

  • Clean the engine’s water pump mating surface using a gasket scraper or plastic razor blade scraper and shop towels.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum surface. Clean and flat is the goal.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/seal onto the new pump (match orientation exactly).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque water pump bolts to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the alternator

  • Set the alternator back into place and install bolts by hand first using a 13mm socket.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque alternator mounting bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the alternator power cable (nut) using a 13mm socket and reinstall the connector until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt per your photo, leaving the easiest pulley for last.
  • Rotate the tensioner with a serpentine belt tool or 15mm long-handled wrench, slip the belt on, then release tension slowly.
  • Verify the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove using a flashlight.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the inner fender using a trim clip removal tool and 8mm socket.
  • Install the wheel and hand-start lug nuts.
  • Lower the van and tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir with OAT 50/50 premix coolant using a funnel until it reaches the MAX line.
  • If equipped with a bleed screw near the coolant outlet/upper hose area, open it using an 8mm socket until coolant flows steadily, then close it. (A bleed screw lets trapped air out.)

Step 12: Warm-up check

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and set heat to HOT with the fan on low.
  • Let it reach normal temperature while watching for leaks with a flashlight.
  • Shut it off, let it cool, and top off the reservoir as needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the water pump and under the van after the first drive.
  • Verify the heater blows hot (a cold heater can mean air is trapped).
  • Recheck coolant level the next morning when cold and top off to MAX.
  • If the temperature rises above normal or you hear gurgling, stop and re-bleed.
