🔧 Camry - Water Pump Replacement

On your Camry, the water pump is driven by the serpentine belt and circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it involves draining coolant, removing the belt and pump, then refilling and bleeding air so the engine doesn’t overheat.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn.
  • 🛑 Support the car with jack stands; never work under a car held only by a jack.
  • 🛑 Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause slipping.
  • 🛑 Clean spills immediately; coolant is toxic to pets and people.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep hands/tools clear of the cooling fan area.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extensions (3" and 6")
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Drain pan (at least 2 gallons)
  • Funnel
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as supplied with pump) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, pre-mixed) - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn/cracked)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • ❄️ Let the engine cool completely (at least 2-3 hours).
  • 🧼 Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area before opening any drains.
  • 🧠 Plan to refill and “bleed” air out afterward (bleeding = removing trapped air so it won’t overheat).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the right-front corner and remove the wheel

  • Use 21mm socket to loosen the lug nuts 1/2 turn.
  • Use floor jack to lift the right-front jack point, then support with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel using the 21mm socket.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield and right-side inner fender liner

  • Use a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool to remove the fasteners/clips.
  • Pull the plastic panels back enough to access the belt, water pump, and pulley area.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Position the drain pan under the radiator drain cock (bottom of radiator).
  • Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand (engine must be cool).
  • Open the radiator drain cock and let coolant drain fully into the drain pan.
  • Tip: Keep coolant off the belt/pulleys.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a 19mm socket on the belt tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley

  • If the pulley bolts want to spin, reinstall the belt temporarily to hold the pulley while loosening.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  • Remove the pulley from the pump hub.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan under the water pump area to catch leftover coolant.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive extensions to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Pull the water pump away from the engine; expect more coolant to spill.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine mating surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop towels.
  • Tip: Don’t gouge aluminum surfaces.

Step 8: Install the new water pump and gasket

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring on the new pump (as designed by the pump manufacturer).
  • Position the new pump and start all bolts by hand.
  • Tighten evenly using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) using a torque wrench.

Step 9: Reinstall the water pump pulley

  • Install the pulley and start the bolts by hand using the 10mm socket.
  • Snug the bolts evenly, then final-tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys (follow the under-hood belt routing diagram).
  • Use the 19mm socket to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt on, then release tension slowly.
  • Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Reinstall splash shields, liner, and wheel

  • Reinstall the panels using the 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the car using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain cock by hand (snug, do not over-tighten).
  • Use a funnel to fill the radiator with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, pre-mixed).
  • Fill the overflow reservoir to the “FULL” line.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT (max heat) and fan on low.
  • Let it idle until it reaches operating temperature; top off coolant as the level drops.
  • Shut the engine off, let it cool completely, then recheck and top off radiator and reservoir.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 With the engine running, inspect around the water pump for any seepage or dripping.
  • 🌡️ Watch the temperature gauge on the test drive; it should stay normal.
  • 🧪 Recheck coolant level the next morning (cold) and top off if needed.
  • 🎧 Listen for belt squeal; if present, recheck belt seating on all pulleys.
