🔧 Camry - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator to prevent overheating. When it leaks or the bearing wears out, you can get coolant loss, overheating, or a whining/grinding noise. On your Camry, the pump is belt-driven and mounted on the front of the engine.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: 2.5L 2AR-FE layout; torque specs listed are typical.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work only on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Clean spills immediately; coolant is toxic to people and pets.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended: remove the negative cable to prevent the fans from starting while your hands are nearby.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (foot-pound)
  • 19mm wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, pre-mixed) - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if worn/cracked)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal; tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • If you’re reusing coolant (not recommended), use a clean drain pan and keep dirt out. Most DIYers replace it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front-right and remove the wheel

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front-right jack point, then set the car on jack stands.
  • Use a 21mm lug wrench (or your tire iron) to remove the wheel. Keep lug nuts together.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver to remove the right-side splash shield/inner fender access panel.

Step 2: Drain the engine coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Slowly open the radiator cap (only if cool), then open the radiator drain cock using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Let coolant drain fully, then close the drain cock snugly (do not over-tighten plastic).

Step 3: Loosen the water pump pulley bolts

  • With the belt still installed (it helps hold the pulley), use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the pulley bolts 1-2 turns.
  • Do not remove them yet; just “break them loose.” This prevents the pulley from spinning.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a 19mm wrench on the belt tensioner hex and rotate to relieve tension.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the engine bay and note the routing (take a quick photo).
  • The “tensioner” is the spring-loaded arm that tightens the belt.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the pulley bolts completely.
  • Remove the pulley and set it aside.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Put rags under the pump area; more coolant will spill when the pump comes off.
  • Use a 10mm socket and extension to remove all water pump mounting bolts.
  • Gently break the pump loose and remove it. If it’s stuck, tap lightly with your hand; don’t pry hard on the aluminum engine surface.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Spray brake cleaner on a rag and wipe until the surface is clean and dry.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum; scratches can cause leaks.

Step 8: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring as supplied with the pump (match the old layout).
  • Position the new pump and hand-start all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) using an inch-pound torque wrench.

Step 9: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and hand-start the bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Snug the pulley bolts evenly with a 10mm socket.
  • Route the serpentine belt back on all pulleys, leaving an easy pulley for last.
  • Use a 19mm wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt on, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Double-check the belt is seated in every pulley groove. A mis-seated belt will squeal or jump.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver.
  • Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the car to the ground.
  • Torque lug nuts to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) using a foot-pound torque wrench in a star pattern.

Step 11: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Install a spill-free coolant funnel kit on the radiator fill neck.
  • Fill with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, pre-mixed) until full.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to MAX heat (this opens the heater core).
  • Let the engine warm up until the upper radiator hose gets hot and the cooling fans cycle on/off.
  • Top off coolant as the level drops and bubbles burp out.
  • Shut the engine off, let it cool, then set the radiator level and fill the overflow reservoir to the FULL line.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and inspect for leaks around the pump and under the car.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck coolant level after it cools fully; top off the overflow reservoir if needed.
  • Watch the temperature gauge for the next few drives; it should stay normal.
  • If you hear belt squeal, recheck belt routing and seating.
